The Woods Coffee is a regional chain of coffeehouses based in Washington State. The company currently has 10 locations throughout Whatcom County.

Brief History

The Woods Coffee was established by the Herman family of Lynden, Washington.

Wes Herman, owner of Woods Coffee, is a convicted felon, having plead guilty in federal court to fraud shortly before opening Woods Coffee in 2002[1].

The first Woods store opened on Bender Road in Lynden in 2002[2]. After six months, Woods opened a second store, also in Lynden. Since then, they have continued on a steady growth pattern throughout Whatcom County, opening stores in Bellingham, Ferndale and Birch Bay.

According to the Herman family, members including Wesley Wayne Herman are active in the corporate hierarchy of the company.

In January 2011, The Woods Coffee opened a bakery to supply their locations.[3].

Locations

Woods Coffee locations include Bellingham, Lynden, Ferndale and Blaine.

Expanding into Bellingham

The Woods Coffee has several locations in Bellingham, including their most profitable venture, on public property at Boulevard Park[4].

This shop is leased from the city for a fee, and maintenance is provided by the city of Bellingham.

Ferndale

The Woods Coffee opened their first location in Ferndale in 2008.

Birch Bay

The Woods Coffee's ninth location opened in Birch Bay in 2009, after Starbucks backed out of their plans to open a coffee shop in the space [5].

Additional Bellingham Expansion

The Woods Coffee opened their tenth location in 2011 in downtown Bellingham. It is located in the Flatiron building owned by Logos Bible Software offices, and it is The Woods Coffee's largest location to date.

In April 2011, the Woods Coffee announced their plans for an eleventh location, in the former Tully's Coffee space on the Guide Meridian in north Bellingham. The store is scheduled to open by the 4th of July[6].
