WhereScape's software enables data warehouse developers to overcome the issues of data warehouses taking too long to build and being too hard to change. With WhereScape, developers can save time and money when building data warehouses in a shorter time frame that will deliver value for longer[1]. WhereScape Ltd currently has offices in Portland Oregon, Auckland New Zealand, and Wokingham UK.

History

WhereScape was originally founded in Auckland, New Zealand during 1999 by co-founders Michael Whitehead (CEO) and Wayne Richmond (CTO). The company was originally, named Profit Management Systems but due to expansion to America during 1991 the company was required to undertake a new image and officially changed their name to WhereScape.

WhereScape now operate out of regional headquarters in Portland – Oregon, Auckland – New Zealand, and Wokingham – England. Today, nearly 500 organizations worldwide use WhereScape software products to improve their data warehousing initiatives and the performance of their data warehousing teams. They all report that, data warehouse and data mart projects based on WhereScape technologies come in under budget and ahead of schedule, and that the resulting data warehouses and marts offer improved performance, greater transparency, and more reliable operation than warehouses or marts built using other technologies and methods.

WhereScape Products

WhereScape are an independent software vendor who plan, build and develop data warehouses and data marts right, now. They recognize that data warehouses can offer huge value to a company but often take too long to build, change or extend. WhereScape’s products are used in every kind of business intelligence project found in today’s commercial environment: from normal-form enterprise data warehouses and data vaults, through user access layers and tiers of dependent data marts, to standalone data marts and reporting systems.

WhereScape 3D
This data driven design tool is WhereScape’s newest product (released May 2011). It is the industry’s first planning and reality testing tool for data warehousing and business intelligence projects. The product produces complete project design documentation and an implementation-ready design by leading data warehouse project teams through the process of source and target exploration and modelling, usability and data legibility, and scoping, sizing and costing activities. WhereScape 3D is compatible with WhereScape RED for automated build-out, or can be used for input to a manual build or a third party tool set. Using WhereScape 3D, project teams plan accurate, reality tested and user-tested projects up front: in hours or days, rather than weeks or months.

With WhereScape 3D, designers and planners can:

  • Capture user stories, interviews and all other requirements artefacts as an integral part of the planning process, in a managed repository
  • Auto-profile, explore and document any potential source system for a data warehousing project, including detailed examination of source data at the table and column levels
  • Design, populate and test any target data warehouse schema, whether normal form, dimensional or hybrid
  • Implement, test and populate any purchased enterprise data model in the planned target environment
  • Perform a complete source-to-target mapping between profiled and documented source systems, and designed target schema
  • Test planned schema, populated with data, for functionality and coverage, with end users, before building activities commence
  • View, manipulate and associate conceptual and logical views of the proposed data warehouse or data mart
  • Capture the design rationale for the new environment, while the project team is in planning
  • Generate task-based views of the project, and assign resources, time and cost to each task, while maintaining data-based and model-based views of the project
  • Generate complete project documentation, for governance, funding or internal communications
  • Export a project directly into WhereScape RED for build-out.

WhereScape RED
This integrated development environment (IDE) is the industry’s first and best which transforms traditional approaches to building, deploying, managing and renovating data warehouses and data marts. WhereScape RED unites source system exploration, ELT, dimensional and normal-form target schema design, and dependent cube-building construction with an integrated operations and management environment and a metadata repository, allowing small teams of data warehousing professionals to implement data warehouses using agile methodologies, practicing iterative-build-and-test disciplines and involving key end-users in the build process. All build-and-operate metadata is customizable, rewritable and stored in a central, managed and versioned repository, bringing application programming discipline, tool integration and automated documentation generation to data warehouse build projects. WhereScape RED can be driven by WhereScape 3D, or used as a stand-alone IDE in environments with advanced BI planning models.

WhereScape RED capabilities:

  • Automates the entire data warehousing life cycle, from design, through implementation, operation and renovation. We provide ELT facilities, but we’re the market’s first and best IDE for the data warehouse build process, end to end.
  • Supports agile as well as traditional project approaches, including Live Prototyping™ -- rapid prototyped and fully functional data warehouses in hours, for user reviews and feasibility testing
  • Generates code automatically, with complete editing freedom post-generation
  • Provides industry best practices out-of-the-box, including generation of surrogate keys, time dimensions, and target indices.
  • Delivers full extraction, load and transformation (ELT) facilities, with integrated dependency management and scheduling
  • Is based on a team-aware metadata repository for all code, audit and workflow components, with full versioning, code promotion, impact analysis tools (trackback and track-forward features), metadata search and automated documentation production.
