Natus Vincere (Na`Vi) — is Ukrainian multigaming e-Sports organization. It is the first team in Counter-Strike history that was able to win three major tournaments in one calendar year - Intel Extreme Masters, Electronic Sports World Cup and World Cyber Games 2010.

History

Creation of the team

Natus Vincere was founded in December 2009[1]. After the collapse of Ukrainian team KerchNET, the former players of the team were supported by a well-known maecenas and organizer of e-sports tournaments, Murat “Arbalet” Zhumashevich[2]. The new team got the name “Arbalet UA”. It was composed of Danylo “Zeus” Teslenko and Ivan “Edward” Sukharev from Kharkiv, Sergey “starix” Ischuk from Kiev, Arseniy “Esenin” Trynozhenko from Lviv and Yegor “markeloff” Markelov from Dnepropetrovsk. Alexander “ZeroGravity” Kokhanovsky from Kiev became their manager.

On January 31, 2010 “Arbalet UA” won the Arbalet Cup Asia 2010, beating Chinese team Tyloo twice and taking over Forze 16:5 (de_inferno) in the finals[3].

In February the contest for the best team name was announced. By then, the team performed under the clan tags “Arbalet UA” and “Na`Vi”[4]. Voting took place on hltv.org, where more than 2000 comments were left. Bruno “hArt1k” Estevens from Portugal was the winner, having proposed the name “Team Vincit”, a derivative of which was the final name “Natus Vincere” (latin – born to win). This allowed leaving the tag intact – “Na`Vi”[5].

Winning the Intel Extreme Masters 4

On May 6, 2010 Natus Vincere became the world champions and earned 50,000$, winning versus Swedish team Fnatic in the grand finals of the fourth season of the Intel Extreme Masters: 16:13 (de_train), 16:14 (de_inferno)[6] . The first matches of the qualification began in September 2009, when the team was playing with another name (KerchNet) and with other players, of whom only Starix remained[7].

In April, 2010 a show-match was held in the “Kiev CyberSport Arena” in Kiev with teams Na`Vi, Fnatic, SK Gaming and UNITED competing. Each team played against each other team on five maps. The tournament was held over three game days and the prize of $12,000 went to the Ukrainians from Na`Vi[8].

Winning the ESWC 2010

After a bad performance at the Arbalet Cup CIS 2010 (4th place[9]), the team decided to skip the next big tournament ASUS Winter 2010[10], so they could prepare for the Arbalet Cup and Ukrainian qualifications for the ESWC. In the middle of May 2010, Na`Vi took 2nd place in the prestigious Arbalet Cup Europe 2010 in Stockholm, losing to Fnatic in the finals and earning $10,000 in prize money[11]. Finally, Na`Vi gained victory in ESWC Ukraine[12].

In the final part of the ESWC, the team hit the highest seeding, along with SK Gaming, Fnatic and mTw.dk[13]. On July 4, 2010, Natus Vincere achieved the highest accolade in the history of Ukrainian e-Sports, winning the ESWC (which previously could not be reached by any CIS team[14]), defeating SK Gaming in the finals: 16:5 (de_train) and 16:4 (de_inferno). During the tournament Na`Vi had passed through the group stage thanks to fortune, but outplayed Fnatic and mTw.dk in the play-offs[15] .

After being victorious in the world championship Natus Vincere announced about their participation in 2 tournaments – Arbalet Cup Dallas and GameGune 2010 (Bilbao)Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).. Na`Vi took 3rd place in the following tournaments: GameGune 2010[16] and Extreme Masters Shanghai[17].

Victory at the World Cyber Games 2010

On August 15, Na`Vi won the Ukrainian qualifications for the World Cyber Games and got a paid voucher to the finals in Los Angeles from September 30 to October 3, 2010[18].

The next tournament for Na`Vi was ASUS Summer 2010, to which the team received a direct invitation. This tournament became first in the ASUS Open series, which was held in the Kiev gaming center “Kiev CyberSport Arena”. In the semi-finals Na`Vi lost to Kazakh team k23 and as a result took the 3rd place.

On October 4, 2010 Natus Vincere became the World Cyber Games world champions by defeating Danish team mTw.dk in the finals[19] . This victory made Na`Vi the first team in the world which had managed to hold the three most prestigious championship titles at once (IEM, ESWC, WCG). At the end of October 2010, ESL TV commentator Bakr “KinGSaicx” Fadl proclaimed that SK Gaming was going to invite the Ukrainian team to take place of its Swedish squad, but the manager of Natus Vincere declined this information[20].

In the beginning of November 2010 Natus Vincere took part in the World e-Sports Masters tournament (WEM 2010), which annually gathers the best teams from all over the world in the Chinese city of Hangzhou. Among eight participants of the tournament, Na’Vi took 4th place as well as $7,500[21].

Victory at DreamHack Winter 2010

From the 25th to 27th of November 2010 in the Swedish city of Jönköpin one of the largest European Lan-parties took place – DreamHack Winter 2010. To go to this tournament, Natus Vincere had to skip a major Russian tournament, ASUS Autumn 2010, since it was coinciding with DreamHack’s dates. After finishing the group stage Na`Vi consistently outplayed teams puta, fnatic, Frag Executors and then mTw.dk in the finals, winning the tournament[22] . During the four play-off matches the Ukrainians lost only one time to fnatic on the new map – de_mirage[23][24]. Sergey ”Starix” Ischuk received the tournament’s MVP award.

After winning DreamHack Winter 2010, the team established a new record: winning $220,000 in one year[25]. The previous record belonged to Swedish team fnatic, who earned $189,000 in 2009 (before that, the record was held by Swedish team SK Gaming with earnings of $183,000 in 2003[26]).

Winning the Intel Extreme Masters 5

On March 5, 2010 Natus Vincere defended their position in Hannover as the champions of the Intel Extreme Masters and earned $35,000. They defeated Polish team Frag Executors in the finals: 16:12 (de_train) and 16:10 (de_dust2)[27]. $4,550 was deducted (13% of the total) from the prize money as a penalty for breaking the rules[28].

The amount of prize money in 2010 – $215,573 (as to November 7, 2010) is the record for the entire history of professional Counter-Strike. Previous records belong to Swedish teams SK-Gaming ($183,000 in 2003) and fnatic ($189,000 in 2009).

Top players

In 2010, popular website HLTV.org had made rankings for the 20 best Counter-Strike players. Yegor “markeloff” Markelov was 1st place, Sergey “Starix” Ischuk 4th, Ivan “Edward” Sukharev 5th and captain of the team Danylo “Zeus” Teslenko had 19th place, as well as “The best captain of the year”.
