Tropical Storm Maria is an active North Atlantic tropical cyclone expected to impact the Lesser Antilles. The thirteenth named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season, Maria developed from a tropical wave west of Africa on September 6.[1]
Meteorological history
A tropical wave southwest of the Cape Verde Islands associated with an area of convection developed on September 5.[1] The system quickly organized, and became associated with a low pressure area later that day.[2] The system continued to organize,[3] and the system was designated Tropical Depression Fourteen on September 6.[4] The depression intensified into a tropical storm on September 7,[5] as it moved swiftly westward. However, because of wind shear, the system was forecast to intensify minimally.[6] Early on August 8, Maria attained its peak winds of 50 mph (85 km/h).[7] Tropical Storm Maria weakened throughout the day on September 8,[8][9] as a result of wind shear,[10] and is likely to have lost its closed circulation.[11][12] Tropical Storm Maria started impacting the Lesser Antilles on September 9.[13]
Preparations and impact
Tropical storm warnings were issued for most of the Lesser Antilles by September 9.[14]
