The ICGV Þór is an UT 512L type offshore patrol vessel designed by Rolls Royce for the Icelandic Coast Guard ship which is set to replace the aging ICGV Óðinn. The construction of the ship was approved by the Icelandic government on December 1, 2006 and launched April 29, 2009 at the ASMAR naval shipyard in Chile. Its main tasks will be EEZ patrol, fishery inspection and search and rescue support. Delivery expected 31 August 2011.
Design
The design, designated UT 512L, is an enlarged design of the Norwegian Coast Guard ship NoCGV Harstad which is designated UT 512. The design was changed based on Icelandic criteria for a larger and faster ship. The ship is expected to be delivered in late august.
2010 Chile earthquake
According to a Janes naval newsbrief, it was feared that the ICGV Þór had been damaged beyond repair during the earthquake that hit Chile on February 27. Þór was in the drydock at the ASMAR yard but suffered only minor damage. An Ecuadorian submarine may also have been damaged beyond repair.[1]
Her launch
It has been recently reported that the ICGV Þór has been launched and birthed for the first time in Boston on the 15th of October.
