This is a list of the important and recurring characters throughout the Professor Layton video game series.

Main characters

Professor Hershel Layton

Voiced by: Yo Oizumi (Japanese); Christopher Robin Miller (English)

Professor Hershel Layton (エルシャール・レイトン, Erushāru Reiton) is the series main character. He is a stereotypical English gentleman, who enjoys solving puzzles and drinking tea. He is a professor of archaeology at London's Gressenheller University. Because of his prowess at solving puzzles and mysteries, he is well-known throughout London and the world. He also has a recurring quote, being: 'That's what a gentleman does'. The signature feature of his appearance is his black top hat (given to him by his dead girlfriend, Claire), which he wears along with an orange shirt under a black high collared coat with matching pants. He is 37 in the first trilogy. He is also adept at fighting, as demonstrated in a sword fight against Anton as well as another with Descole in the Eternal Diva.

In his past, he dated a woman named Claire, who was working on a time machine project, along with Alan Dimitri and Bill Hawk. However, when the machine was tested, it exploded, killing Claire. Layton comforts a young Clive, who's parents had also been killed in the explosion, and keeps him from running back in. Layton, who discovers that the events of that day had been censored, he undergoes an investigation until he is beaten by thugs (presumably Bill Hawk's).

In Curious Village, Layton and Luke goes to St Mystere to solve a mystery involving a will. After discovering the secret of the village (most of the village people are robots and Flora is the real prize), he decides to leave the treasure alone so the village people could continue to function (upon getting the treasure, the robots deactivate) and adopts Flora.

In Diabolical Box, he visits his old mentor's home, only to discover him (presumably) dead. With a ticket to the Monetary Express as the only clue, he and Luke sets off.

In Unwound Future, he and Luke are invited to attend an event demonstrating a time machine, and witness the prime minister disappearing, along with Dr. Stahngun. Soon he receives a letter by someone who claims to be Future Luke, telling them to head to a clock shop. Upon heading there, a time machine is activated, and he and Luke are transported to Future London. While on his quest in Future London, he repeatedly sees a woman similar to his former love, Claire.

Luke Triton

Voiced by: Maki Horikita (Japanese), Lani Minella (US English), Maria Darling (UK English)

Luke Triton (ルーク・トライトン, Rūku Toraiton) is a young boy who accompanies Professor Layton. He aspires to be a gentleman like his professor, though like all boys his age, he has a tendency to let a cheeky remark slip out. He is fond of puzzles, animals, teddy bears, and the color blue. Luke is also able to understand and converse with animals, which has proven helpful in his adventures with Layton. He is only 13 years old and has an appetite that can never seemed to be quenched.

Flora Reinhold

Voiced by: Mamiko Noto (Japanese), Lani Minella (games), Claire Morgan (Eternal Diva)

Flora Reinhold (アロマ・ラインフォード, Aroma Rainfōdo, Aroma Reinford in Japanese version) is the daughter of the wealthy Augustus Reinhold. She is sweet, shy, and reserved, but can show her stubborn side when dealing with others' concerns for her safety. After the events in the Curious Village, she becomes Layton's protégée and joins Layton and Luke on their mysteries. She also loves to cook but to Layton and Luke's dismay, she is rather bad at it. She also solves about four puzzles in Unwound Future.

She joins Professor Layton and Luke in Diabolical Box, but she gets kidnapped at a village the Monetary Express stops at by Don Paolo. The Flora that appears throughout the rest of the game is actually Don Paolo in disguise.

In Unwound Future, she's angered that Layton and Luke are always running off on their own and follows them to the Midland Clock Shop (along with Inspector Chemley and Barton). She is brought to Future London and helps Layton on his quest. Near the end of the game, where Future Luke is revealed to be Clive, he kidnaps her, and Flora later gets rescued within Clive's war machine.

Emmy Altava

Voiced by: Saki Aibu (Japanese), Emma Tate (Eternal Diva), Lani Minella (games)

Emmy Altava (レミ・アルタワ, Remi Arutawa, Remi Altava in Japanese version) is Professor Layton's assistant as appointed by the President of Gressenheller University, and one of the main characters of the second trilogy. She is said to be a heroine, and loves taking pictures, bringing her camera everywhere with her.

Don Paolo

Voiced by: Minoru Inaba (Japanese), Christopher Miller (games), Jonathan Keeble (Eternal Diva)

Layton's self-declared nemesis and the main villain of the first trilogy (excluding Unwound Future where he allied with Layton). Don Paolo (ドン・ポール, Don Pōru) is a scientist and inventor banished from the scientific community for performing unethical experiments. A genius of machinery and a master of disguises, Don Paolo studied in the same university as Layton and his unrequited love for Layton's girlfriend Claire is the main reason for his hatred of him. When he is not plotting evil, Don Paolo enjoys making and listening to music.

Jean Descole

Voiced by: Atsuro Watabe (Japanese), Jonathan Keeble (Eternal Diva)

Jean Descole (ジャン・デスコール, Jan Desukōru) is the main villain of the second trilogy and the "Eternal Diva" feature film. He is an elusive masked man who seems to know Layton, although it's currently unknown how they are connected. As of the end of the fifth game his true identity is unknown. His lifelong ambition is to find the Aslant's Destiny. It's currently unknown what this is, only that descole is on the verge of finding it. He also seems to see Broneph as a rival for the Aslant's Destiny, considering the final cutscene in Mask of Miracle in which Broneph attempts to stop Descole from getting the third legacy, Aslant's Endless Corridor or the Akbadain Ruins, the other 2 legacies being Mist Haley's Healing Garden and Ambrosia's Town of Harmony. Descole's identity was nearly revealed when Broneph had his guards take down Descole, in which he took of Descole's mask, but his serveant came in at the last moment to save his master, keeping his identity safe.

Inspector Chelmey

Voiced by: Shiro Saito (Japanese); Christopher Miller (English)

Inspector Chelmey (チェルミー警部, Cherumī Keibu) is the police chief of London's Scotland Yard. It is said that he strikes fear into the heart of all criminals in London. Despite this, it seems that Layton and Luke always manage to be one step ahead of the inspector. When not working, he enjoys his wife's sweet potato fritters. In the European releases of the games, his favourite food is cakes, a slightly more British afternoon snack.

Constable Barton

Constable Barton is Inspector Chelmey's timid assistant who constantly has snacking urges. The inspector admitted his fondess of him in The Lost Future, which is why he was never kicked off of the police force, even after his many mistakes. It is a little-known fact that he is actually 27 years old, despite his appearance.

Inspector Clamp Grosky

Voiced by: Houchu Ohtsuka (Japanese); Stuart Organ (English)(UK)

Inspector Clamp Grosky (クランプ・グロスキー, Kuranpu Gurosukī) is a police inspector from Scotland Yard and plays a role similar to Inspector Chelmey in the second trilogy. He has a fiery passion for mysteries that require his expertise. He is also very athletic and energetic, able to outmaneuver even sharks (as seen in Eternal Diva).

Granny Riddleton

Granny Riddleton (ナゾーバ, Nazōba) is a recurring character, first appearing chronologically (though not present for the rest of the game) in the Specter's Flute. Most people view her as a witch, presumably due to her get up. She appears throughout Layton and Luke's adventures, gathering all of the puzzles that they've missed and puts it in a small hut. In Unwound Future, she retires and is succeeded by her granddaughter, Puzzlette.

Curious Village

Baron Reinhold

Baron Augustus Reinhold passed away, leaving behind a legendary family treasure - the Golden Apple. He was said to be a kind and caring man. He loved his daughter, Flora, more than anything.

Lady Dahlia

Lady Dahlia is the mistress of the Reinhold Manor, following Augustus Reinhold's death. She has a cold, snappy and snobby demeanor, but shows her sweet side when dealing with Flora. She sends a letter to Layton asking for his assistance in solving the mystery of the Golden Apple.

Matthew

Matthew has faithfully served as the Reinhold Manor's butler for many years. He has a constantly worried expression, which could be due to Lady Dahlia's constant demands. When he is more worried than normal, he flaps his arms, very much like a chicken.

Simon

Simon is Baron Augustus' and Lady Dahlia's nephew. He appears early in the game and he acts somewhat stuck up. He's the nephew of Gordon Reinhold too. In the game he is murdered but it turns out he wasn't and was facing a malfunction due to being a robot.

Gordon

Gordon is the brother to Agustus Reinhold of the Reinhold family. He frets constantly about attracting the ladies. He's the uncle to Simon Reinhold.

Ramon

Ramon is the Reinhold family's gardener. He's known in the village by most as 'that man with creepy purple lips'. He tends to hang out at Crouton's cafe rather than working.

Stachenscarfen

Stachenscarfen, also simply known as Stachen, is one of the villagers of St. Mystere. He later makes cameos in the next two games. At the end of the first game's credits, he is shown exiting St. Mystere. Much about Stachenscarfen remains a mystery, because he randomly appears in various locations without any explanation.

Claudia

Claudia is the pampered feline pet of Lady Dahlia. This fluffy little cat may have a delicate name, but the truth is that she is actually a he.

Diabolical/Pandora's Box

Dr. Schrader

Dr. Andrew Schrader (アンドルー・シュレーダー, Andorū Shurēdā) is Professor Layton's old mentor. He is a polite and intelligent man, who falls victim to the Elysian Box as a result of researching its curse. He sends a letter to Layton before falling victim to the curse, leading Layton and Luke on to find the cause behind his death. It is later revealed that he only fell unconscious and recovered to full health.

Katia Anderson

Katia Anderson is voiced by Cynthia Geary and is a mysterious young lady, who is seeking the Elysian Box. As the daughter of the mayor of Dropstone, she is well-known in her town, and is said to be a beautiful, sweet girl. It is later discovered that she is Anton Herzen's granddaughter.

Anton Herzen

Anton Herzen is rumored to be a vampire inhabiting Folsense's Herzen Castle, seeming not to age at all for 50 years. He has a strong connection to the Elysian Box. It is later revealed that he does not look as he seems, that the hallucinogenic gas has made him look like he hasn't aged. It is discovered that he is Katia's grandfather. In the Japanese version, his name is Anthony. For some reason they call him Anthony when it comes to The Secret Door of The Unwound Future (except for the UK version).

Mr. Beluga

Mr. Beluga (birth name is Fredrich Herzen) is the founder of the Molentary Express, as well as being Sammy's uncle and the younger brother of Anton Herzen. He too is in search of the Elysian Box.

Sammy Thunder

Samuel "Sammy" Thunder is the train conductor of the Molentary Express, and the nephew of Mr. Beluga. Despite his job, Sammy acts like a rockstar, and loves nothing more than to rock and roll. He gives Layton a camera, which becomes a mini-game that unlocks more puzzles.

Hamster

The fat hamster is friends with the Chef in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box. Once the player earns the hamster, they unlock a new minigame with unlockable toys from puzzles to make the hamster thin again. Once the player has finished the minigame and succeeded in making the hamster thin, the hamster helps the player find hint coins within the game.

Unwound/Lost Future

Clive Dove

Voiced by: Shun Oguri (Japanese); Yuri Lowenthal (English)

Clive (Klaus in the Japanese version) is the young man who tried to trick Layton and Luke that they were in the future by posing as a future version of Luke. Initially, he wants to help them, but shows his true colours near the end of the game by kidnapping Flora (though for what reasons is not known). It is revealed he wished to avenge his parents, who were killed in the same explosion that killed Claire, but also reveals at the end that he sent for Layton to snap him out of his insanity. Like Flora, he solves about four puzzles in the game.

Dr. Stahngun/Dimitri Allen

Voiced by: Takaya Kamikawa (Japanese); Liam O'Brien (English)

Dimitri Allen (アラン・ディミトリー, Aran Dimitorī, Alan Dimitri in the Japanese version), under the disguise of Dr. Alain Stahngun, kidnaps the British Prime Minister Bill Hawks at his showing of his time machine. He used to be a research partner with Bill Hawks and Claire. He, too, was in love with Claire. He poses as Future Hershel Layton in the story, but Layton sees through him.

Claire Foley

Voiced by: Yoshino Kimura (Japanese); Lani Minella (English)

Claire Foley (クレア・フォーリー, Kura Fōrī) was Professor Layton's old college sweetheart. She was admired by many including her work partner Dimitri Allen and the self claimed nemesis of the Professor, Don Paolo (this is why he dislikes Layton). Claire gave Layton his beloved top hat just before she left for work. Unfortunately that day, ten years ago, she was killed in a failed time machine experiment. Unbeknownst to Layton, the blast had managed to send her ten years into the future, though the molecular instability in her body meant she was doomed to inevitably return to the moment of the accident. During the time she had remaining, she assisted Layton under the alias of her younger sister, Celeste (サリアス, Sariasu, Salias in the Japanese version), to stop Dimitri who was trying to build a time machine to stop her instability and then to stop the insane Clive from exacting revenge on London. Accepting her fate, she says her goodbyes to Layton before returning to her time.

Puzzlette

Voiced by: Yuko Ogura

Puzzlette (ナゾリーヌ, Nazorīnu, Nazolene in the Japanese version) is Granny Riddleton's granddaughter and replaces her in this game, as Granny Riddleton has "gone on vacation." She hates bugs, swatting a puzzle bee to take over his job. She is slightly unusual.

Bill Hawks

Voiced by: Akihiko Ishizumi Jock Blanely (English)

Bill Hawks (ビル・ホーク, Biry Hōku) is the Prime Minister of Britain. He is kidnapped by Dimitri as revenge for being responsible for killing Claire in the accident ten years ago. He was a former scientist on the Time Travel Project with Dimitri and Claire and climbed his way up the political ladder due to corruption.
