"The District Sleeps Alone Tonight" was released on July 8, 2003 by The Postal Service under the Sub Pop Records label. The single included a cover of "Suddenly Everything Has Changed" by The Flaming Lips, and two remixed tracks.
In 2004, this song was featured in the soundtrack of 2004 film D.E.B.S..
The title track's eponymous "District" is Washington, D.C., known colloquially as The District by its inhabitants. Gibbard wrote the song after his girlfriend Allisyn Levy moved to Washington, D.C.
This was the third CD released by The Postal Service. The cover artwork was designed by Kozyndan.
