FAKKU is the largest English speaking hentai website in the world. The site attracts over 300 million pageviews a month and over 10 million unique visitors with an active community of over 300,000 registered users. The site has more than 300,000 registered users who have made over 2 million posts across the site. Quantcast ranks FAKKU in the top 1,200 most visited websites in the world.[1]

At its core FAKKU is an aggregator that provides users with adult manga and doujinshi from Japan. Originally the content was uploaded exclusively by the sites administrators but later these privileges were shared with the community, allowing for translators to have their work seen by a much larger audience.

As of July 2011 FAKKU entered into a streaming licensing deal with Kitty Media, a subsidiary of Media Blasters. The deal allows FAKKU to stream select titles at its discretion; starting with Immoral Sisters.[2] For the moment FAKKU provides the titles to its audience for free with no plans to charge for the content in the foreseeable future.

FAKKU and its creator Jacob Grady have a known relationship with Danny Choo, Japanese TV personality and host of Culture Japan. At Anime Expo 2010 and 2011 in Los Angeles Jacob and Danny hosted community meetups that attracted large audiences of fans and users.[3][4][5]

History

FAKKU was created in December 2006 by Jacob Grady while he was studying Computer Science in Massachusetts.[6] Jacob created the site the preceding summer under the codename ‘‘All About Hentai’’ or ‘’AAH’’ (which later became the sites sub-title). Jacob originally used money from student loans to pay for server and bandwidth costs but that quickly became unsustainable and shortly after its launch FAKKU was forced to shut down. It was brought back up after a flurry of user donations rescued the site in July 2007.

Since its launch FAKKU has undergone three substantial upgrades to its architecture and interface, brought on by a need for optimization and scalability as traffic increased. Each upgrade has resulted in significant improvements to the overall design and reliability of the site. These changes were usually met by resistance and controversy from the community, but were quickly accepted as the benefits became apparent.

Recognition

In 2011, FAKKU's creator, Jacob Grady was invited to speak as a special guest at several conventions[7], including: Kawaii Kon in Honolulu, HI; Otakuthon in Montreal, Quebec; Anime Oasis in Boise, ID; MangaNEXT in East Rutherford, NJ. He also gave panels at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CA; Anime Boston in Boston, MA; and Otakon in Baltimore, MD.
