The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence (Italy) is an international postgraduate and post-doctoral teaching and research institute established by European Union member states to contribute to cultural and scientific development in the social sciences, in a European perspective. By statute, the EUI is an intergovernmental organisation.

Programmes and fellowships

Doctoral programme

The doctoral programme covers studies in Economics; History and Civilization; Law and Political and Social Sciences. Every year, some 140 recent graduates are enrolled for the four-year doctoral grant. Students who have completed and successfully defended their thesis before an international academic examining board are awarded a research doctorate.

Degrees awarded

  • Doctor of Economics
  • Doctor of History and Civilization
  • Doctor of Laws
  • Doctor of Political and Social Sciences

Masters Programme in Law

Since 1984 the European University Institute offers law students a one-year programme leading to the degree of Master in Comparative, European and International Law (LL.M. degree level).

Postdoctoral fellowships

The EUI has several post-doctoral fellowships in social science:

Rankings

The EUI is one of the leading social science research institutions in Europe, and with around 1,000 researchers at various levels in their careers also one of the largest graduate schools. The EUI Political and Social Science department was ranked first in Europe and fifth worldwide in the 2004 Hix ranking of such departments (it has appeared in the worldwide top 5 since 1995).[1] In November 2009, the same department was included in the Die Zeit 'CHE Excellence Ranking' for political science.[2]

Departments, centre, and services

The Institute has four departments:

The interdisciplinary centre, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, pursues research into the key political themes of contemporary European societies, and brings together specialists in given themes, favouring international and comparative aspects of research. The Max Weber Programme is Europe’s largest postdoctoral programme in the social sciences and is funded by the European Commission. In 2010 the Academy of Global Governance was created.
The EUI Library has an extensive collection of traditional resources (books, documents and journals on paper or in microform) and a rapidly growing digital collection. The Library collections contain approximately 3,000 current journals on paper, access to approximately 8,000 e-journals and approximately half a million volumes in law, economics, history and civilization, and social and political sciences.

Campus

Badia Bell Tower

The European University Institute campus is situated on a hillside overlooking Florence. Many of its buildings are of historical and architectural interest, amongst these the Badia Fiesolana, - its main seat - and Villa Schifanoia. Villa Il Poggiolo houses the Historical Archives of the European Union which are attached to the Institute. The Historical Archives conserve and offer access to the original documents of the European institutions. The Archives will have a permanent home in the near future in Villa Salviati, another Tuscan landmark.

Organisation

The main bodies are the Academic Council, the Research Council, the Budgetary Committee and the High Council (composed of the Member State delegates). The President of the Institute is former EU-Parliament President Josep Borrell Fontelles, who is assisted in his duties by the Institute's Secretary General, Ferrara Pasquale.

History

The idea of establishing a teaching and research institution for the first time on a European level, was first launched in 1955 at the Messina Conference, and took shape in 1972 when, after a long series of negotiations, the Member States signed the Convention setting up the European University Institute, with its seat in Florence.

Institutional and research publications

The following institutional publications are produced by the EUI[3]:

  • The EUI Review - a newsletter published three times a year.
  • The President's Annual Report
  • Doctoral Grants & Postdoctoral Fellowships in Florence - an annual prospectus.
  • Robert Schuman Centre Brochure - published annually.

The EUI Publications Repository Cadmus lists bibliographic references and, where possible, links to full text-versions of publications (Working Papers, Books, Contributions to books, E-Books, Articles, Theses) by members of the EUI academic community.

Alumni

Many researchers who have taken doctorates at the EUI are employed as professors in leading universities, officials in European Institutions and international organizations, or hold positions in government administration. Approximately one third of EUI alumni work in a country other than their own.
Ex researchers are encouraged to join the EUI Alumni Association so as to support the Alumni Research Grant Fund.
