Maatraan (Tamilமாற்றான், Māṟṟāṉ) is an upcoming Tamil action thriller directed and co-written by K. V. Anand and scripted by writers Subha. It stars Suriya, who will portray five different roles, with Kajal Aggarwal playing the female lead,[1] and features music by Harris Jayaraj. The Stan Winston Studios has been roped in to deal with the special effects of the film. [2]

During the post-production stage of Ko, K. V. Anand announced that he would direct Suriya again after the success of Ayan, further noting that it would be produced by AGS Entertainment and would begin once Suriya finished shooting for A. R. Murugadoss' sci-fi thriller 7aum Arivu. Several actresses were considered including Taapsee Pannu, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Sharma,[3] with Kajal Aggarwal eventually grabbing the role.[4] Thara who played Karthik's sister in Agni Natchathiram was signed on to play Suriya's mother.[5]

Filming

It was officially launched on July 22, 2011 in Chennai.[6][7] The first shooting schedule was near the Pakistan border. In November 2011, the crew filmed a song in Latvia.[8] A major portion of the film was shot in the Balkan region in countries like Russia, Croatia, Serbia, Albania and Macedonia.[9][10] Anand filmed the action sequences at the OMR in Chennai. Also, 25% sequences are remaining to be shot. The rest of the film is to take place in the huge sets erected at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.[11] The director has roped in Stan Winston studios, one of the legendary and Top most Visual effects from Hollywood. This is the first time that KV Anand has been doing a film based on Visual Effects.[12]

Release

Maatraan is touted to become Suriya's biggest release till date. The distribution rights of the film have been sold to Bellamkonda Suresh's Multi Dimensional Films for 17 crores.[13] The film was scheduled for a Tamil New Year’s release, but due to delay the release date was pushed to June.[14]
