"Is Anybody Out There" is written and performed by Somali-born rapper K'Naan which featrues Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado from his first extended play More Beautiful than Silcence[2]. The song was first released as a digital download to itunes on January 24, 2012.
Background
The composition for "Is Anybody Out There" is produced by Furtado's longtime collaborative producer Salaam Remi and Ryan Tedder[3] which incoperates a simple piano ficture and strings. Lyrically, the track speaks about a self-assurance and the hardships in life. K'naan raps about the character Mary, comparing her to American actress Cameron Diaz; “Something ’bout Mary, never won a pageant / Never felt pretty, never looked like Cameron / Diaz was her last name, always been abandoned / Keep your head up baby girl, this your anthem.”[4] It is the second time the duo have collaborated, the first being "Going Away".[5]
Music Video
The video for "Is Anybody Out There" was directed by Chris Robinson[6] in Toronto, Ontario, Canada during the first week of February. The plot follows a female character by the name of Mary who is troubled by her adolescence. K'Naan narrates the journey Mary faces along the way with her unsupportive father, drug usage, and sureal world. K'naan and Furtado are shot in a seperate scene located in the desolate woods. [7]
Critical Reception
"Is Anybody Out The" obtained mixed reviews by it's critics. The track received negative reviews by Jody Rosen of Rolling Stone. Rosen gave the collaboration a mere one and a half out of five stars, criticizing the song's lyrical content. [8] Furtado's vocals and K'Naan's rapping were commended by Bill Lamb of About.com, giving the track a positive four out of five stars.[9]

Chart Performance
The single first made it's debut in Canada's Hot 100 at number 67, however it began it decrease on the chart the following week. It placed at number 73 it's second week, being the first single to chart for Furtado since 2010's "Night Is Young". [11]
