Crash survivors

Rose

From The Bronx, New York, Rose is a kind, motherly figure who helps the survivors through difficult situations. Though her husband Bernard was in the tail section of the plane during the crash, she maintained her faith and continued to believe that he was still alive. Rose and Bernard are reunited when he and the other tail-section survivors join the main camp.

Specifically, Rose has helped Charlie overcome the brief loss of Claire in the first season, as well as help him get into touch with his religious side. She has also helped Hurley take an inventory of the food in the hatch, as well as distributing the food among the survivors, after keeping Hurley from destroying it.

Vincent

Vincent is Walt's dog (a Yellow Labrador Retriever). Michael told Walt that he was given to him by his stepfather. Vincent often appears before something bad is about to happen to one of the survivors.

Aaron Littleton

Born to Claire Littleton on the island, Aaron Littleton was originally going to be adopted after he was born. A psychic told Claire that she must raise the baby herself, but when she refuses the psychic arranges for Claire to be on Flight 815 so a family in Los Angeles could adopt him. Rousseau kidnaps Aaron, saying she wants to trade him for her own child, Alex; however, Charlie and Sayid rescue him. Shortly after burning the drug-runner plane, Charlie begins to have vivid dreams that Aaron is in danger. These dreams spur Charlie into abducting Aaron and attempting to baptize him. However, Locke returns Aaron to Claire. She then asks Mr. Eko to baptise her and Aaron.

Edward Mars

U.S. Marshal Edward Mars had been pursuing Kate for three years before capturing her in Australia. He was on Flight 815 to extradite her to the United States. He was badly injured during the crash and whenever he regained consciousness he warns that Kate is dangerous. Sawyer shoots Mars (since Mars wants to be put out of his misery) in the chest, but fails to kill him. Jack then euthanizes Mars.

Leslie Arzt

Leslie Arzt, who asks the survivors to address him as "Doctor", was a ninth grade science teacher. He warns the raft crew that the coming monsoon season will take the raft straight to Antarctica. Arzt accompanies the team going to the Black Rock to assist in the retrieval of the dynamite. When Jack, Kate, and Locke bring it outside, a panicked Arzt explains to them that, at the current temperature, dynamite sweats nitroglycerin, the most reactive substance known to man. After Arzt wraps a stick of dynamite in Kate's shirt, the dynamite explodes in his hands, killing him.

Bernard

Main article: Bernard (Lost)

Bernard is Rose's husband and is found among the remaining tail-section survivors. He was the one who talked to Boone over the radio transmission in from the Beechcraft in "Deus Ex Machina". Rose and Bernard are reunited when the tail-section survivors join the main camp. In "The Long Con", Hurley mentions that Bernard is a dentist.

Cindy

Cindy was a flight attendant on Flight 815 and is the only known surviving crew member of the crash. She landed with the tail section survivors and out of the 23 of them, was one of only five to have not been killed or taken by The Others. While looking for the mid-section survivors' camp, she disappears. She confirmed that the plane was flying off course.

Other crash survivors

The following other survivors have been named or clearly identified in at least one episode.

  1. Pilot - Killed by the “monster” in the jungle in “Pilot”.
  2. Barbara Joanna Miller - Drowned at the beginning of “White Rabbit”.
  3. Sullivan - Treated by Jack for heat rash in “Solitary”, he is also believed to be a hypochondriac.
  4. Scott Jackson - He is often confused by survivors with Steve Jenkins. Killed by Ethan Rom in “Homecoming”.
  5. Steve Jenkins - He is often confused by survivors with Scott Jackson.
  6. Lance - According to Hurley, Lance is a little skinny guy with glasses and red hair.
  7. Tracy - Her message in a bottle says she has a husband and two children in Fresno, California. Sawyer suspects she may be having an island affair with Steve.
  8. Nathan - One of the tail section survivors. He was suspected of being one of the “Others”, but was killed by Goodwin, the actual “Other” in “The Other 48 Days”.
  9. Emma - Zack's sister. Young survivor of the tail section crash, who almost died of drowning when the plane crashed and then abducted by the “Others” in “The Other 48 Days”.
  10. Zack - Emma's brother. Young survivor of the tail section crash, and then abducted by the “Others” in “The Other 48 Days”.
  11. Donald - One of the tail section survivors. His broken leg is set by Libby after the crash but he dies of infection on the fifth day after the crash in “The Other 48 Days”.
  12. Nancy - One of the tail section survivors, she is pulled out of the water by Mr. Eko. She is abducted by the others in “The Other 48 Days”.
  13. Jim - One of the tail section survivors. He is abducted by the others in “The Other 48 Days”.
  14. Eli - One of the tail section survivors. He is abducted by the others in “The Other 48 Days”.

Island inhabitants

Ethan Rom

Ethan Rom says he is from Ontario, Canada. He initially appears to be a survivor of the crash, helping Locke with boar hunting. However, while conducting a census Hurley discovers that Ethan is not on the flight manifest. Ethan kidnaps Claire and Charlie, setting off a frantic manhunt. Jack and Kate catch up to him and he threatens to kill Charlie or Claire if the pursuit continues. Making good on his promise, Ethan hangs Charlie from a tree, but Jack and Kate rescue him.

He takes Claire to a Dharma Initiative station where she is given medical attention and a nursery for Aaron. However, before she gives birth, a teenage girl helps Claire escape from The Others, who plan on removing the baby from Claire's womb. Danielle then carries an unconscious Claire back to the camp. Ethan returns and demands that Charlie bring Claire to him or he will kill the survivors one by one. When the group fails to do so, Ethan kills Scott. The next day Ethan is ambushed by Jack, Sayid, Locke, Sawyer, and Kate, all of whom have guns. They hope to take him prisoner, but Charlie shoots and kills him using a gun that Jack dropped. Charlie's rationale for killing Ethan is, "he deserved to die".

Danielle Rousseau

Danielle Rousseau is a French woman who has been on the island for approximately 16 years, and put out the distress signal that Sayid found. She traps Sayid thinking that he is one of The Others, and holds him prisoner. When he inists that he does not know anything about her missing daughter, Alex, she tortures him with electrical shocks. While holding Sayid prisoner, she tells him how she came to the island. Danielle was on a science expedition, which included several people including her husband Robert. Her science team was armed with rifles. When her team got infected she killed her whole team, in order to make sure that when they got rescued others did not get infected. She estimates the island is at least three days away from Tahiti.

Sayid and Danielle hear a noise outside of her camp. While she is out hunting it, Sayid steals her maps and notes about the island, grabs her other rifle, and escapes back to the other survivors. Before letting Sayid go, she tells him that her companions started to become sick, so she killed them one by one. She then gave birth to a daughter, Alex, and shortly afterwards a plume of black smoke appeared and The Others kidnapped Alex. After seeing that the papers Sayid stole contain the numbers, Hurley searches for Danielle. She tells him that the numbers were being broadcast on the radio, and she knows nothing about them.

She takes some of the crash survivors to an old Ship called the "Black Rock", while trying to get dynamite to blow the hatch, in an area she called the "Dark Territory". They come up against the monster, but Danielle describes it as a "Security System" that was there to protect the Island. Earlier she had told them that the transmitter carrying the "Numbers Broadcast" that her team picked up and followed to the Island, was near the "Black Rock".

After another plume appears in the distance, Danielle warns the survivors that the Others are coming. While everyone prepares for the Others' arrival, she kidnaps Claire's baby, Aaron. Sayid and Charlie pursue her and find her with the baby near the source of the black smoke, planning to exchange Aaron for her own child, Alex; however, she did not find the Others there. Sayid and Charlie, who believes Danielle lit the fire for the plume of black smoke herself, return Aaron to Claire. Sayid, however, noticed there were no tracks beside the fire. Some weeks later, Danielle finds Sayid and takes him to a trap she set. A man, Henry Gale, is inside, whom she claims is an Other. When Henry tries to escape, Danielle wounds him with an arrow.

Danielle arrives at camp one night to warn Claire that Aaron is sick. The next day she helps Kate and Claire search for a Dharma station. Claire remembers that after she escaped from the station when she was pregnant, Danielle helped her get back to her camp.

Desmond

Desmond is a man who was living in the "Swan" Dharma Initiative research station under the mysterious hatch. He crossed paths with Jack years before being stranded on the island when both men were running the the stairs of an empty stadium at night. The two have a brief but meaningful conversation, in which Desmond explains that he is training for a race around the world. During the race three years later, Desmond's racing ship crashed on the island, and, as he tells Jack, a man named Kelvin emerged from the jungle and took him back to the hatch. Desmond watched as Kelvin input the numbers into a computer. When Desmond asked, "What was that all about?" Kelvin replied, "Just saving the world". Later, Kelvin died, leaving Desmond in solitude. When the survivors enter the hatch, they accidentally break the computer. Convinced that the world is going to end, Desmond frantically flees the hatch. Jack catches up with him, and Desmond tells him the code, and to enter it every 108 minutes. Desmond then vanishes with his backpack into the jungle and has not been seen since.

Goodwin

Goodwin was a spy for The Others who lived among the tail section survivors, claiming to be a former member of the Peace Corps. After Nathan is accused of being a traitor and thrown in a pit-cage, Goodwin kills him. While alone, Ana Lucia reveals that she knows Goodwin is one of The Others. Before Goodwin dies, he implies that the survivors who had been abducted are "good people." "Nathan was not a good person," Goodwin tells Ana-Lucia. "That's why he wasn't on the list." Ana Lucia kills him.

"Mr. Friendly"

"Mr. Friendly" is the nickname given by Lost's creators to a currently unnamed man, who is the spokesman for The Others. When he first encounters the survivors, he abducts Walt, and his henchmen blow up the raft and shoot Sawyer. Jack, Locke, and Sawyer encounter Mr. Friendly while searching for Michael. He tells them that Walt is fine, but scolds the group for being curious and "opening doors that shouldn't be opened." He says that Michael will not find Walt or the Others, "where he is." Mr. Friendly reveals that dozens of his people are surrounding the trio. He explains that right now they just have a misunderstanding, and that the only reason the survivors are still living on the island is because the Others allow them. He then brings out Kate, whom he has captured, and tells Jack that he can have her back if the survivors surrender their weapons and stay on their side of the island. Mr. Friendly is seen looking more clean-cut and without his beard, briefly talking to Ethan Rom in Claire's flashback. Later, Kate finds theatrical glue and a false beard that Mr. Friendly had worn. When Ana Lucia suggested that Mr. Friendly was the leader of the Others, the fake Henry Gale replied "Him? He's nothing! No one!" However, because Ana-Lucia referred to Mr. Friendly as "the guy with the beard," as she is not aware that he is actually clean-shaven, it is possible that the two were referring to two different people.

"Henry Gale"

Henry Gale is the name claimed by a man whom Danielle captures and suspects is one of the Others. After she wounds him, Locke and Sayid confine Gale in the armory of the Swan Station. Sayid, believing Danielle to be correct, interrogates and tortures the man. Gale claims to be from Minnesota, the wealthy former owner of a mining company that mined for "non-metallic minerals". He and his wife, Jennifer, crashed into the northern shore of the Island while the two were traveling by helium/hot air balloon. According to Gale, the two hid in caves until she fell ill and died of a fever. Gale claims he then buried her in the jungle.

In "One of Them", Gale tells Sayid that he can not remember where he buried his wife, but in "The Whole Truth" he tells Ana-Lucia that he remembers where the balloon is because that was where his wife was buried.

In "Maternity Leave", Gale receives a visit from Mr. Eko, who asks Gale for forgiveness for the Others he killed during his attempted kidnapping. Later in the episode, Gale makes a comment to Locke about Jack calling all the shots, which succeeds in upsetting Locke and deepening his rift with Jack. In "The Whole Truth", he draws a map for Ana-Lucia to find his balloon, which she keeps secret from Jack and Locke. Later, as Jack and Locke have breakfast with Henry, he reveals to the two that he drew a map for Ana-Lucia. He says that if he were "one of these people who you consider your enemies", he would draw a map to a secluded location where his "buddies" would ambush the search party and then use them to trade for his freedom. After a moment, he adds that it is a good thing he is not one of them.

In "Lockdown", the search party finds the balloon and grave as Gale described. However, Sayid is not convinced by the balloon and unearths the grave (off-screen) discovering a man buried with an ID naming him Henry Gale. Meanwhile, Gale is set free by Locke to aid him in escaping the "locked-down" hatch, once Locke gives his word to "defend Gale, no matter what". With Locke pinned under a heavy lockdown door, Gale learns of the computer, the countdown, and the code numbers. Locke sends him to crawl above the ceiling, bypassing the lockdown doors. Gale reports to Locke that he entered the codes and takes care of Locke's injured leg, and Locke is grateful that Henry did not abandon him. However, moments later, Jack, Kate, Charlie, Sayid, and Ana-Lucia come in and reveal to Locke (and the viewers) the ID card found in the grave.

In "Dave," "Henry" says the real Henry Gale was already dead in the balloon when he came upon it. This is also proven false when Sayid reveals that he had found a $20 bill in the real Henry Gale's wallet, with a message to his wife, Jennifer, about landing on an island. "Henry" panics, saying he was not the one who killed him, but he buried him. When Sayid presses Henry to reveal the truth about the Others, Henry reacts with terror, saying "he" will kill him if he reveals anything. Sayid believes Mr. Friendly is the man "Henry" refers to, but "Henry" laughs, calling Mr. Friendly "nothing." Later, "Henry" asked Locke to still call him "Henry," as he was "used to it." "Henry" also says that he never entered the numbers or pushed the button when Locke was pinned under the door. The timer went back to 108 on its own. He states that the Hatch means nothing to "the Others" and that the button is a joke.

Crossovers

In various flashback sequences the survivors have communicated with, seen, been incidentally in the presence of, or been indirectly in contact with other survivors or their family members. For example, Sawyer shares a drink with Jack's father, Christian, in a bar the night that Christian died. Sawyer tells a teary-eyed Jack about the meeting, and helps Jack find closure regarding his father's death. There are other crossovers that the survivors are unaware of. For example, Hurley's manager at the chicken restaurant, Randy, goes on to become Locke's manager at a box company. Then after winning the lottery Hurley becomes the majority stockholder of that company. Some crossovers are more discreetly hidden. For example, there have been two instances where Hurley and Sayid appeared on a television screen in the background, and one instance where Jack has been a background actor in the hospital during flashback sequence focussing on another character. Damon Lindelof has said the crossovers are not easter eggs, but rather a larger part of the mythology of Lost. [3]

Characters in other media

The following characters have been named or identified in other media related to Lost, but have not appeared in the broadcast series:

  1. Janelle Granger - a woman who kept a diary during the first season of Lost on ABC's official website
  2. Larry - a man whose odd behavior bothered Janelle.
  3. Sally - a crash survivor mentioned in an Easter egg on the Oceanic Air site.
  4. Robert - also an Easter egg on the Oceanic site.
  5. Faith Harrington - an environmentalist who survived the crash. The novel, Lost: Endangered Species, is written from her point of view.
  6. George - another crash survivor who is mentioned in Lost: Endangered Species and Lost: Secret Identity.
  7. Dexter Cross/ Dexter Stubbs - another crash survivor in Lost: Secret Identity which is written from his point of view.
  8. Jason - the brother of Dexter's girlfriend, as told in Lost: Secret Identity; found dead on the island two days after the crash; presumed to have died on impact.
  9. Jeff Hadley - another crash survivor, as told in Jack Thompson's novel Lost: Signs of Life. He was a professor of art in Scotland.

Island Census

Current number of inhabitants: at least 53 (45 remaining Flight 815 survivors, including Aaron, and at least eight island residents), as of "Dave." 15 more survivors are currently unaccounted for, but are assumed to be alive on the island.

Oceanic 815

72 people survived the crash of Flight 815:

Cockpit: (1) The pilot of Flight 815 is seen alive during "Pilot",
Fuselage: (49) In "Pilot", Jack told the pilot of Flight 815 that there were "at least 48" mid section survivors. (According to Lost Writers' Assistant Matt Ragghianti [4], the initial 48 referenced do not include "Turbine Man" (who survived the crash but died before Jack met the pilot), the pilot (who was in the front section), or Ethan Rom (who was never on the plane)).
Tail: (22) Libby states, in "Everybody Hates Hugo", that 23 people from the tail section survived the crash. However, according to Lost Writers' Assistant Matt Ragghianti [5], Libby mistakenly included Goodwin in this tally. As Supervising Producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach states, "Goodwin was not exposed as an other until weeks into the tailies' sojourn in the island, so more likely than not his [Goodwin's] inclusion into the head count became accepted by mere rote." [6]

This brings the remaining number of people from Flight 815 known to be alive, not including the missing survivors, to 45 (including Aaron Littleton, who was born after the crash).

Residents

The following people were presumably alive on the island at the time of the crash of Flight 815:

  • Others 1 and 2 - Killed by Eko. (Day 1)
  • Other 3 - Killed by Ana-Lucia during the second raid on their camp. (Day 12)
  • Goodwin - Falsely claims to be a Flight 815 tail section survivor. Killed by Ana-Lucia. (Day 27)
  • Ethan Rom - Falsely claims to be a Flight 815 mid-section survivor. Killed by Charlie. (Day 29)
  • Danielle Rousseau - A member of a shipwrecked French science expedition.
  • Desmond - A shipwrecked sailboat racer, operator of the Dharma Initiative's Station 3
  • Anonymous - alleged 'Henry Gale' - A purported balloon-crash survivor; that alibi was disproven by Sayid.
  • "Mr. Friendly" - The member of the boat crew who speaks.
  • Boat Henchman #1 - The member of the boat crew who grabbed Walt.
  • Boat Henchman #2 - The member of the boat crew who hits Michael.
  • Boat Henchwoman - The member of the boat crew who throws an explosive device.
  • Alexandra Rousseau - Danielle's daughter, taken by the "Others" as an infant 16 years prior to the crash.
  • "Him" - The leader of the Others. He has yet to be seen.

Former Residents

The following people arrived on the island prior to the crash of Flight 815, though it is not always clear what happened to them upon arrival.

  • Crew and captives aboard the Black Rock - Fate unknown, but several of their skeletons were found aboard the ship.
  • "Adam" and "Eve" - Died 40-50 years before the crash, body found in the cave by Kate.
  • Five 'Fatalities' - mentioned on the blast door map that Locke sees.
  • Robert Rousseau - Husband of Danielle Rousseau and member of the expedition, killed by Danielle.
  • Montand - A member of Danielle's team who lost his arm in the Dark Territory, killed by Danielle.
  • Brennan and two other members of Danielle's team - killed by Danielle.
  • Kelvin - Former operator of Station 3, died of unknown causes.
  • Goldie - One of Eko's Nigerian mercenaries, who died after parachuting from the Beech 18 aircraft; his name is never used in the show, but he is referred to as "Goldie" in press releases, presumably because of his gold tooth. His body is found by Locke and Boone, alongside a gun and Nigerian currency.
  • Yemi - Eko's brother, who was put on the Beech 18 by Eko after sustaining a gunshot wound. He remained with the plane when it crashed.
  • Henry Gale - The real Henry Gale, found buried beneath the wreckage of a balloon in the jungle. From his ID, an African-American man from Wayzata, Minnesota. According to a note found on his body, Gale survived the balloon crash.
