Scott Alan Stapp (born Anthony Scott Flippen on August 8, 1973 in Orlando, Florida, USA) is a singer and songwriter, and a former member of the band Creed.

Biography

His lyrics suggest strong Christian beliefs. He often chooses not to talk about this on interview, preferring to let his lyrics speak for themselves, but he has opened up to the Christian press. He attended Lee College (now known as Lee University) in Cleveland, Tennessee, where he was expelled for marijuana usage. Scott attended Tallahassee Community College and received an associates degree in the Arts. He then attended the Florida State University, where Creed was formed.

Stapp cites The Doors, particularly Jim Morrison, as one of his principle musical influences, and performed with the surviving members of the band for a televised concert in 1999, as well as the Stoned Immaculate tribute album.

He has announced a partnership with NASCAR that will see tracks from his solo album, The Great Divide, used in spots for the sport's upcoming Chase for the Championship. The alliance culminated with Stapp performing the national anthem at the Ford 400 race in Homestead, Florida.

On February 10, 2006, Stapp married Miss New York USA 2004 winner Jaclyn Nesheiwat in Miami, Florida. This is his second marriage and her first. He was previously married to Hillaree Burns for 16 months before divorcing in 1999. He has a son from the first marriage, Jagger Stapp.

Scandals

Drunk Driving

Scott Stapp was arrested by Florida cops in July 2002 and charged with reckless driving after his SUV ran off the road before swerving back into the proper lane. The 29-year-old singer was busted when an Orange County Sheriff's deputy happened to be cruising nearby. Stapp was released from custody after posting $500 bond. [1]

Fans sue

Fans sued claiming that lead singer Scott Stapp was drunk or drugged-up during a disastrous December concert in 2002, a quartet of Chicago-area Creed fans filed a class-action lawsuit claiming that Stapp & Co. owe refunds to the 15,000 fans who attended the ragged performance. The Allstate Arena gig was such a disaster, in fact, that the band circulated an e-mail apology acknowledging that, "there has been much concern about Scott's health and we want to assure everyone that he is doing very well and is taking a much needed break at home in Orlando."

Medical treatments

In 2003, a business associate of rock star Scott Stapp, claimed that the singer failed to reimburse him $60,000 paid to a controversial Beverly Hills doctor known for his unorthodox drug detox treatments. In a lawsuit filed this month in Florida's Orange County Circuit Court, Jeffrey Cameron contends that he paid Dr. David Kipper "for certain medical treatments received" by Stapp during a three-month period in mid-2002. In November of that year, the Medical Board of California charged Kipper with gross negligence and unprofessional conduct for, among other things, overprescribing habit-forming drugs and running an illegal detox program. The state action resulted in the revocation of Kipper's medical license.

Casino Cinema

In 2005, Stapp appeared intoxicated when he arrived at the Spike TV show "Casino Cinema" upper East Side studio and proceeded to terrorize hosts Beth Ostrosky and Steve Schirripa, the producers and the crew members alike with his boorish and vulgar antics on- and off-camera. Scott was there as a guest co-host on the weekly program, which plays a movie with intermittent breaks of studio chatter and interactive casino games. According to one of the employees "From the moment he walked into the studio, he was rude, belligerent and drunk, with Beth (host), he was nothing but extremely mean, sexist and an all-around jerk". Even though he had his publicist with him, witnesses report that Stapp cursed "every other word," called a female executive producer a "bitch," constantly flipped the woman, and referred to Ostrosky - better known as Howard Stern's longtime girlfriend - as a "bimbo." Stapp also took swipes at his more famous rock colleagues. "I met [ U2's] Bono and The Edge, and Bono was an ass to me," he declared, before insulting Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl's manhood as "freaking little." When a crew member accidently bumped into him on the set and quickly said he was sorry, Stapp snapped, "Yeah, you better fucking be."

Vs. 311

Over Thanksgiving, he was involved in an incident in Baltimore, Maryland where he was in a fight between him and three members of the band 311 at a local hotel. The episode was caught on the security video tape and Jonathan Jordan, director of hotel security, said the fight was "definitely started by 311." 311 vocalist S.A. Martinez told MTV, "(Stapp) was acting out of control, looking for attention and being loud and obnoxious. He walked up to the bar, took a shot of whiskey and then slammed the shot glass down on the bar, and it shattered everywhere. The band claims that Stapp proceeded to sit down next to Martinez and make “a disrespectful and crude remark” to his wife. Stapp later clarified that members of 311 insulted his own fiancee, and then jumped him. [2]

Sex tape

California pornography company Red Light District claims to have acquired a 1999 sex tape in which Stapp and rock artist Kid Rock engage in sex acts with four groupies. RLD planned to release the tape in 2006, however as of the present (02/22/06), Rock has admitted the tape is legitimate, and has filed a legal injunction to stop the video. Stapp, meanwhile, tried to avoid comment on it. Kid Rock mentioned in his lawsuit that the tape was to remain in the custody of Stapp, and was not for distribution.

Wedding Arrest

Hours after his wedding to Nesheiwat, Stapp was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport for being drunk in public. Stapp, en route to his Hawaiian honeymoon, was stopped from boarding a plane at LAX Saturday after airline personnel deemed the rocker "antagonistic" and "boisterous". A spokesman for the airport police, Lieutenant Tyrone Stallings, said the rocker was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in a public place and taken to the Van Nuys station for processing. Stapp demanded a blood-alcohol test at the station, where he registered a 0.18--twice the legal limit. He was then booked and released on $250 bail. After a court hearing he was not charged.
