Wanted to add content to the 'Alter Ego' subheading under Eminem's page Sarahsartaj (talk) 00:08, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Eminem's alter ego has been very important to his career and developing himself as an artist. With almost every album, Eminem has chosen to release the first singles as parodies of his fellow peers and celebrities. Hits such as “The Real Slim Shady”, “My Name Is”, “Without Me”, “Just Lose It”, “A** like that” and “We Made You” have all been used to kick off the promotion of a new album. While some may wonder why he uses celebrities as targets, he claims, “...[sometimes] you can get people's attention and hold it longer if you put it in lighter skits and interludes. Sprinkle in some shit that's funny, so when it's time to be serious again, people can give their full, undivided attention..”. [1]. Eminem has mocked many celebrities, such as Britney Spears, Sarah Palin, Moby, Hilary Duff, Elvis, Michael Jackson to name a few. Some have been offended, but some are also honoured and do not take it personally. Eminem justifies his use of parodies by stating that he feels it is more important for his videos to portray what was really going on at the moment than for the people that he makes fun of to experience hurt feelings [2]

You are on the right track. Talking about your edits on the articles talk page is always the right first step. Hopefully some other editors will show up to discuss your proposed changes. If no one discusses it with you then you can add {{edit semi-protected}} to the section. If you do that you need to have the exact verbiage that you think should go into the article, where it should go and the reliable sources that support the material. I see you that just after you posted here you uploaded a file to the Commons. Is that the file you were going to upload here? If it is, the file will probably be deleted from commons as it does not allow non-free images. You should read about notability and conflict of interest before you go any further because right now your article has no sources that are independent of the university. Hello. Can someone PLEASE confirm my account, so that I may upload an image, or can someone possibly upload the image for me? I asked this already and have not only been ignored, but action has been taken to injur the article in question (by the removal of the Victim of Xen.png image at the wikimedia commons despite my request). I want to upload the exact same image, but then have it here on Wikipedia as a fair use image. My account is now still unconfirmed. Confirming it would solve this (or if someone wants to upload the image, the original source is : http://smolders.cc/content/image/cache/data/SS20110901/0-500x500.jpg and it is a game cover art that anyone can use to display the game). Sincerely, Sam Smolders (talk) 04:46, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I asked for permission to upload the appropriate image or if somebody else could upload it and now the article, "Victim of Xen" has been deleted by an administrator (Bwilkins) that has not responded to any messages (even though they interact with others) and has cited an inappropriate reason in the log.

Please, anybody reading this be aware of the abuse by this administrator. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Smolders (talkcontribs)

Sam, we administrators are human beings and we sometimes make mistakes – I'm not saying Bwilkins was wrong, I have not checked the deleted article –; however, we always try to act with the best intentions. If you think one of us is wrong, you should start a polite discussion on his talk page, calmly explaining why you think he's in error. If you start casting aspersions, it's possible that your request is ignored. If you take my advice, you should politely ask Bwilkins why he deleted the article you created. I'm sure he'll be glad to explain and even change his mind, if he was actually wrong. Salvio Let's talk about it! 17:02, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Extended content

Hi Salvio,

Thank you for the advice. I have already politely asked for assistance prior to the infraction (in attempting to improve and receiving no subsequent response). After the fact, I immediately sought communication, but am still met without reply. DURING the action, Bwilkins left a reason in the history that is incorrect. I'm sure they don't mean ill, but their severe action and lack of communication warrant attention, to prevent further abuse. I'm open to communication and am eager to resupply the article for Wikipedia.

Sincerely,

Sam Smolders (talk) 17:48, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Salvio,

I just wanted to let you know that Bwilkins had sent their first communcation shortly before my response to you! It seems an oversight may have occured. Thank you for your advice! I hope we both learn from the experience!

Sincerely,

Sam Smolders (talk) 18:53, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Smolders: like everyone else, I am a volunteer here - I have a real life, a real job, and a real family. Like everyone else here, I reply to polite discourse - indeed, my talkpage clearly states that you will get no response if you're abusive. Today at 9:33, you posted a nasty, abusive screed on my talkpage. You edited to make it worse 3 times between then and 11:25. Immediately after that, you came back to this page and stated that I was being abusive. Do you have any questions about why I did not respond? Do you understand the community and volunteer nature of this project? Do you feel that behaviour like yours needs to be encouraged on this project? Do you honestly believe that, based on your actions, it's I that needed to learn from this experience? (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 20:34, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bwilkins,

Thank you for responding. I understand that you are a volunteer etc, but I requested help here, on this page, to help improve an article (I was asking for someone to confirm my account or to upload an image for me). This request was entirely ignored and severe action taken (the entire Victim of Xen page was deleted by you). This is an abuse of power (where it is clear that I am seeking assistance and am open to communication, yet am assaulted and ignored). It is not about why you did not respond (I guessed on your talk page), it is about this.

You say : "Everybody has something to add to Wikipedia: many just don't know it yet"

I assume this is meant to encourage new users. These are wise words. I hold you to that.

Can you please restore the article and assist me in uploading the image (either for me or by confirming my account)?

Sincerely,

Sam Smolders (talk) 21:50, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Users automatically gain "autoconfirmed" status after a certain number of edits and a certain number of days. It is expected that during that time, they will learn and understand what Wikipedia is about. They may be granted confirmed status earlier, provided they appear to have that same understanding - it's rare. From your distinct lack of response to the above questions, your continued claims of "abuse" when none exists, and your behaviour on Wikipedia so far, I'm not at all convinced that you understand the nature of this project. As such, I will personally not add confirmed rights at this point. (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 22:20, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bwilkins,

I made my intentions clear and requested the desired actions be performed by someone with that power (if nobody felt like giving me early access). I did this in a civil manner (the emphasis on PLEASE was due to the mentioned similar action in relation to wikimedia, where the removal of the image (as apposed to the article) seemed justified and they left a response). THIS request (here on Wikipedia) was not honored (nor is it still). My "distinct lack of response," as you call it, was a direct response to your claims, in that you are claiming victimization (through a reported misuse) without due cause, while my statement clarifies that you are not the subject of unfair victimization. You state that "none exists" when speaking of abuse. This, in and of itself would be false if either of our cases were true (which might be dandy), but "abuse" is "to use wrongly or improperly." as in "to abuse one's authority."[1]

The Victim of Xen article was unmarked by your visit before my request. My post in this article, where I request assistance has activity from you before and prior to my request, indicating that you learned about Victim of Xen through my request. There have been no responses made to my request (outside of your last response, where you still only mention part of the request and deny me the honor) and yet you deleted the Victim of Xen article (even giving an incorrect reason) with also no follow-up response.

You do not call this misuse of one's authority? This is circumventing support and deleting a new user's article (asking for help), while playing a deaf ear. I feel this is against the "Bwilkins' philosophy of Wikipedia," and not helpful to it's growth.

Furthermore, it has been made clear by others that the reason given was indeed false, yet you continue to post and ignore requests to restore the page.

I know I speak directly (I'm sure it's part of my vested interest), but please do not take offence. I speak forthrightly about the occurance because and it would be incorrect to allow you to abuse my request for help (as it hurts not only your image, but mine in the long run).

Please, listen to the words of your peers (as I'm not sure if you value mine) and reverse the actions that you have put in place. I ask this, because it corrects the error that you would otherwise be publically denying (through not responding to me AND your peers). You can always RE-DELETE the page etc etc etc if you feel that way (just find a good reason etc... one that I can work on, preferably, if there is one).

Really, it's not a bad thing to make errors. I made one when I made the page (bad link), then another when I replied to a post (wrong location). Another one with the double false comment on your talk page...

You say that I have posted on your page. This true. You say that the posting was nasty. This is false. Or. At least in the sense that "nasty" is an opinion (please cite opinions). I most certainly was direct about stating that your actions were an abuse, but you DID use a request for help to perform the action AND performed your action incorrectly (meaning the reason was wrong).

The post merely stated that you abused administrative powers (where you had circumvented an earlier request for assistance and unduely removed the article which you still have not restored, even though it has been made clear that your reason is incorrect (not just by me).

The edits that "worsened" (please cite personal opinions) the article... removed a repetition of the false statement (is a lie) and also encouraged you to remove the personal guess about why the error might have happened, after having read it (for our benefit in finding a mutual conclusion). If you could explain how this "worsened" the article, then I can better understand why you feel that way.

You state that I also mentioned your abuse here. Yes, you hadn't responded and weren't responding. How else would you have me gather your attention? It would be incorrect to further "humiliate" (in the sense of humility, naturally) me by having me ignore the abuse publically (I wouldn't have mentioned it if I weren't asking for help). I believe the goal is to encourage, new, well-meaning users (unless I am misunderstanding your philosophy : in which case, shoot me an email). I feel another way to encourage new users would not be to allow these things to happen.

Lastly, you wanted me to answer the questions (even though I did deny your claim to victimization), so I will (I know how irritating it can be when someone doesn't respond to a question in the way that we expected):

Do you have any questions about why I did not respond?

Yes, many. I want to know why you did not respond this article. Also, DOES the reasoning and logic behind the deletion tie-in with my vested interest (I would like to know, so that I can perhaps ask for help differently in the future to avoid similar disdain if this is the case). How did you feel when reading my request for assistance in this article? Why did you feel that way (for the same reasons as mentioned earlier)?

Do you understand the community and volunteer nature of this project?

Yes, I believe I understand. This is part of the reason I took the time to speak with you.

Do you feel that behaviour like yours needs to be encouraged on this project?

Yes, most certainly. I feel everyone should attempt to seek communications and maintain communications to improve each other through mutual growth and when ignored, yet acted against, should notify others by seeking assistance (further strengthening everyone's relationships).

Do you honestly believe that, based on your actions, it's I that needed to learn from this experience?

I honestly believe that based on the I in that sentence... that you might be defensive. Not only that, but I believe that in any interaction, two people can learn (I'm learning about you, You're learning about me... We're a great big family).

If you caught that last reference, I'm sorry (I had to).

Sincerely,

Sam Smolders (talk) 02:23, 5 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Not done Hi, and thank you for creating an account to edit Wikipedia. Although I fully understand your desire to dive right in, many of our articles are semi-protected because they are controversial, prone to vandalism, or other reasons. As a new editor with few edits, it might be wise to discuss your edits on the article talkpage in order to gain consensus for your edits, or use {{Edit semi-protected}} to request the edit be performed. I only recommend this until you're used to the challenges of reliable sources, the biographies of living persons policy, and other similar things. The good news is that fewer than 5% of Wikipedia articles are protected; this means that 95% of the articles can use your help right now! (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 11:17, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
