Template:Infobox Commonwealth Youth Games Country Bangladesh competed in the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games held in the British Crown Dependency of Isle of Man from 7 to 13 September 2011. Their participation marked their second Commonwealth Youth Games appearance. The delegation of Bangladesh consisted of four officials and four competitors (two men and two women) participating in three different sports— athletics, boxing and swimming. This was a decrease in the number of athletes from the nation's last appearance at the Games, when ten athletes were sent to the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune. None of the athletes won any medals. Sarkar ranked sixth overall in the semifinal round for 100m Women race; bantamweight boxer, Hossen, lost to Obedy Mutapa of Zambia in the Quarter-Final, after receiving a bye. Additionally, Akter ranked 22nd, 19th and DNS in the heat rounds of 50 m backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke events respectively, and Islam 12th and 14th in the heat rounds of 50 m and 100 m butterfly events respectively.

Background

Independent Bangladesh became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations in 1972, and debuted in the Commonwealth Games in 1990 in Auckland, New Zealand.[1] Bangladesh did not participate in first two—2000 Edinburgh and 2004 Bendigo—Commonwealth Youth Games.[2][3] It entered ten athletes, all men, in the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India, competed in athletics, bowing and shooting; it won one bronze medal.[4][5] Bangladesh was one of the 63 nations that participated in the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games held in the British Crown Dependency of Isle of Man from 7 to 13 September 2011, making its second Commonwealth Youth Games appearance.[6][7] Bangladesh finished last in the medal table, in 23rd, with no medals, sharing the position with thirty one other Commonwealth Games Associations.[8]

Delegation

The Bangladesh National Olympic Committee selected a delegation consisting of four officials and four competitors for the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games. Only Hossen was one of the athletes who had previously participated in the Commonwealth Youth Games.[4] The first, Papia Rani Sarkar, was the sole athlete to represent the nation in athletics. Pugilist Riyad Hossen competed in the bantamweight class. Sonia Akter and Anik Islam, as the only two swimmers from Bangladeshi side, participated in three and two events respectively. The delegation was also accompanied by four officials, including chef-de-mission A K Sarker.[9][10]

Athletics

Athletics events were held in the National Sports Center Athletics Stadium.[11] Papia Rani Sarkar represented Bangladesh in the 100m Women race event of athletics. This event took place on 9 September 2011. Sarkar's results in the event were 12.63 seconds and 12.66 seconds in the semifinals and heat round respectively, and she finished sixth in the first semifinal standings. The gold medal in this event was won by Sophie Papps of England with a result of 11.53 seconds in the finals.[12]
