The Spirit Indestructible is the upcoming fifth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado. The album is set for release on September 11, 2012. Furtado has been confirmed as the executive producer for The Spirit Indestructible, as well as a principal writer.[1] Further production on The Spirit Indestructible comes from the likes of Darkchild, Salaam Remi, Mike Angelakos, Bob Rock, Fraser T. Smith, Di Genius, The Demolition Crew, John Shanks and Tiesto.[2]
The lead single from The Spirit Indestructible, "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)", was released digitally on April 17, 2012.
Background
Development
The Spirit Indestructible is Furtado's first English-language studio album since Loose (2006). Furtado announced via her official Twitter that the album would be released on June 19, 2012, in the US however, the release date is pushed back to September 18, 2012, Worldwide.[3] A statement from Furtado's publicist was released speaking on the albums delay in which it said, "Nelly Furtado has decided to move the release date of her new album, The Spirit Indestructible, to accommodate both US and international promotion schedules throughout the summer.[4]
Furtado spoke on her influence for the album, saying, "I experienced real joy for the first time, Communal joy. Obviously giving birth was joyful, personally. But when I went to Africa, I really experienced people celebrating and being joyful together for the first time. It really reinforced my belief in humanity. It reminded me who I am. That's why the album is so childlike. The experience also inspired the album's title track, which pays tribute to mankind's ability to overcome adversity. "So many things have happened that have inspired me in a lot of ways to believe in humanity."[5]
Furtado proclaims that the overall sound of The Spirit Indestructible would be most similar to her debut album Whoa, Nelly! (2000), but containing elements from urban, alternative, and reggae.[6][7] The influences for the album range from Janelle Monae, The xx, to Florence + the Machine.[8]
Recording
Furtado helped co-write each song on The Spirit Indestructible. Furtado has been confirmed as the executive producer for The Spirit Indestructible, as well as a principal writer.[1] Furtado worked with a variety of producers and songwriters including hip-hop songwriter-producer Salaam Remi who wrote and produced "Something," featuring Nas, also songwriter-producer Rodney Jerkins, metal producer Bob Rock, Dutch DJ and EDM producer Tiesto, John Shanks and Di Genius. A deluxe version of the album will feature several other songs, including Furtado's collaborations with Fraser T. Smith, Mike Angelakos, and a track featuring the Kenyan Boys Choir that Furtado produced herself.
"I began writing these songs around the time I released my Spanish album Mi Plan," Furtado says. "I was in a great headspace, feeling refreshed and ready to really deliver in English again. This album is all about positivity, youth, good energy, and the relentlessness of the spirit. I want people to live this music the way we did when we wrote it. I want them to jump, dance, scream, laugh, cry, love, and vibe to it, and to turn it up very loud everywhere."[9]
Recording sessions largely took place in Darkchild's studios on America's West Coast, although some songs were recorded in Jamaica and Canada.[5] Nelly spoke on working with Darkchild saying "We'd only work 'til midnight at the latest. Rodney has two little kids – so he doesn't go to bed very late”.[5]
Artwork
Furtado released the albums artwork on her official Twitter account. Using twitter Furtado spoke on the artwork saying "It's light in color so that it's black-sharpie-ready for when I sign CDs for the beautiful fans."[10]
Singles
The lead single from The Spirit Indestructible, "Big Hoops (Bigger the Better)", was released digitally on April 17, 2012. On May 15, Nelly confirmed that the second single will off the album will be the title track 'The Spirit Indestructible'.
