A proposition to integrate information from the main Nyingma article into the statements in regards to the "Head of the Nyingma" sectiion, giving some better background to the idea and also write Kyabje Penor Rinpoche statement into it.
No feedback is receive so far in over a month, publishing my edits on the "Head of Nyingmapa" part, for convenience retaining older and proposed / published versions in here.

Within article on the Nyingma it is written:
"There was never a single "head of the lineage" in the manner of either the Ganden Tripa or Dalai Lama of the Gelugpa, the Karmapa of the Karma Kagyu, or the Sakya Trizin of the Sakya. It was only recently in exile in India that this role was created at the request of the Tibetan Government in Exile, and it is largely administrative. Nevertheless, the lamas who have served in this role are among the most universally highly regarded. They are:

Dudjom Rinpoche (c. 1904–1987), served from the 1960s until his death.
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (c. 1910–1991), served from 1987 until his death.
Penor (Pema Norbu) Rinpoche (1932-2009) served from 1991 until retirement in 2003.
Mindroling Trichen Rinpoche (c. 1930–2008), served from 2003 until his death.
Trulshik Rinpoche (1923-), served from 2010-present. Selected after Chatral Rinpoche declined the position.[11]"

Existing text:
In 1992 HH Penor Rinpoche was elected the Supreme Head of the Nyingmapa, the oldest of the schools of Tibetan Buddhism. He served in this post until 2003 at which point he retired from his duties and was succeeded by the late His Holiness Mindrolling Trichen Rinpoche. (As of February 21, 2008, a new head of Nyingmapa has not been elected.)

The position, a ceremonial and administrative role created in the wake of the Tibetan diaspora, is conferred upon those lamas held in the highest esteem by a consensus of Nyingma lamas, Rinpoches, tulkus, and khenpos. Penor Rinpoche himself succeeded H. H. Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche.

Statement from Kyabje Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche from 2001 in regards to the position of The Head of the Nyingmapas and on the retirement in order to concentrate on the duties and responsibilities held as head of the Palyul lineage.

Within Nyingma Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism there did not exist a position of a main throneholder, thus upon onset of the Tibetan diaspora there was a request from the Tibetan Government in Exile to the Nyingmapa followers to request some one to be such a representative, some one of the highest esteem who could be responsible for all of the Nyingmapa Traditition followers. Now the request is usually made during Nyingma Monlam Chenmo in Bodhgaya.

Dudjom Rinpoche, Jigdrel Yeshe Dorje (c. 1904–1987), was unanimously requested to become first Head of the Nyingmapas and has served from the 1960s until passing in 1987.
Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche (c. 1910–1991), was requested to become second Head of the Nyingmapas and served from 1987 until passing in 1991.
Drubwang Pema Norbu Rinpoche (1932-2009), was requested to become third Head of the Nyingmapas and served from 1991 until retirement in 2001.
Mindroling Trichen Rinpoche (c. 1930–2008), was requested to become fourth Head of the Nyingmapas and served from 2003 until passing in 2008.
Chatral Sangye Dorje Rinpoche was requested to become fifth Head of the Nyingmapas, but declined.
Trulshik Rinpoche (1923-), was requested to become fifth Head of the Nyingmapas in 2010 and is serving at the time of writing of this article.
