Gods Eater Burst is a 2011 action-adventure video game exclusively for the PlayStation Portable developed and published by Namco Bandai Games in Japan and published by D3Publisher, a sister company of Namco Bandai Games, in North America.[2] The game was originally released in Japan as God Eater (ゴッドイーター, Goddo Ītā) on February 4, 2010 but was later improved and re-released as God Eater Burst (ゴッドイーター バースト, Goddo Ītā Bāsuto) on October 28, 2010. Gods Eater Burst was released in North America on March 15, 2011. The opening and ending theme songs for the game are "Over the Clouds" and "My Life", both of which are sung by Alan.[3] A sequel to Burst has been planned to release in Japan sometime in 2012 titled God Eater 2.

The game possesses a very large storyline which can be experienced fully with names and voice actors in single-player mode. Players play as a young, previously unemployed, warrior who has decided to go up against powerful creatures called "Aragami"; warriors who face these beasts are called "God Eaters".[2] The game boasts a mission-based single-player mode consisting of more than 100 missions inclusive of co-operative play with up to three teammates over local adhoc wireless multiplayer or AI-controlled teammates. The North American version of the game will also support the PlayStation 3's adhoc Party.[1] The game also features character creation allowing customization of hair style, hair color, face, skin, clothing, voice as well as weapons using special materials. Equipment is divided into three groups: Blade, Gun, and Shield. Weapons can be switched between melee, ranged and shield in-mission.

Plot

Setting and story

Gods Eater Burst take place during 2071 on Japan. World has been destroyed by Aragami. Aragami is a colony of hundreds of thousands of cells called oracle cells uniting under a cell core. The only way to kill an Aragami is by using God Arc, a Bio weapons that can destroy aragami core, making all oracle cells lose their cohesion. An anti-aragami organization called Fenrir, hired warriors with God Arc to destroy Aragami. This warriors is called Gods Eater. [4]

Characters

The game contains seven main characters:

  • The player is a new recruit on Far East Branch. Assigned as member of first unit.[5]
  • Lindow is leader of first unit. Has high survival rate.[5]
  • Soma is member of first unit. Hates interacting with others.[6]
  • Sakuya is sub-leader of first unit.[5]
  • Kota is member of first unit. Assigned with player at the same time.[5]
  • Alisa is new recruit from Russia branch. Has mental problem.[7]
  • Tsubaki is Lindow's sister. Also act as instructor of first, second, and third unit.[5]

Development

The game was first announced on July 9, 2009 by Namco Bandai Games.[2] Shortly after the game's Japanese release a North American release was announced by a subsidiary of Namco Bandai, D3 Publisher, for a Q3 2010 release.[1] However, D3 has now decided to localize God Eater Burst instead at the beginning of 2011. On January 12, 2011 it was revealed that the North American title would be changed to Gods Eater Burst making the word God plural.[8]

It has been announced that there will be a sequel to the game entitled God Eater 2 on Famitsu, set three years after the first game.[9] It has a release date for 2012; it is unknown if it will be released outside Japan. The games first trailer was released September, 15, 2011 during the annual gaming convention Tokyo Game show.

Trading card game

A trading card game was released as [God Eater Burst] Monster Collection Trading Card Game in September 2011. Two fifty card decks were released as God Eater Burst - God Eater and God Eater Burst - Aragami that included special dice, a reference sheet, and a play mat.

Miniatures

A set of nine miniatures featuring the Aragami was released in Japan as Soul of Figuration God Eater.

Soundtrack

The official God Eater Burst Drama and Original Soundtrack was released on one disc on December 22, 2010.[10] It was composed by Go Shiina and featured the game's theme Over The Cloud.

Reception

The game scored well in Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, which gave a total score of 34 out of 40(9/9/8/8).[11] It sold 295,000 copies in the first week of its Japanese release,[12] and by March 2011 God Eater had sold over 610,000 copies in Japan.[13][14][15]
