Freya Mavor (born 13 August 1993) is a Scottish actress best known for playing Mini McGuinness in the E4 teen drama Skins.
Career
Mavor's first acting experience was in school productions of Shakespeare’s The Tempest as Miranda and in The Merchant of Venice prior to a stint in the National Youth Theatre.[1]
In 2011 Mavor made her professional debut, when she gained a lead role as Mini McGuinness in the fifth and sixth series of E4 BAFTA-winning drama Skins, after originally auditioning for the role of Grace Blood.[2] She described her character as "quite a feisty and witty figure, but she doesn't really think about the consequences of her actions."[3] For her role as Mini Mcguinness she got a nomination for Best Actress at TV Choice Awards 2012, which will be held on 10 September in London.[4]
Modelling
Mavor was enlisted as the face of Pringle of Scotland for its 2011 spring/summer campaign.[5] She also won the Fashion Icon of the Year Award at the 2011 Scottish Fashion Awards.[6]
Personal life
Mavor was born in Glasgow but grew up in Inverleith, Edinburgh, after moving there with her parents and older brother Alex.[7] For a period she also lived in La Rochelle, France.[8] Her father James Mavor is an award-winning playwright who heads up the MA screenwriting course at Napier University. Her grandfather, Ronald Bingo Mavor, was The Scotsman's theatre critic in the early 1960s before he became the director of the Scottish Arts Council.[9] Mavor’s great-grandfather, Oswald Henry Mavor, aka James Bridie, changed the Scottish theatrical landscape, setting up in 1950 a college of Drama, the forerunner of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.[1]
Mavor declared she first became interested in acting after watching Stanley Kubrick's The Shining when she was 10 years old.[7] She has plans to continue her passion on stage and screen, expresses a penchant for physical theatre and independent films.[8]
She studied at Mary Erskine School in Edinburgh[10] and is a member of the National Youth Theatre.
Mavor was voted 78th in the UK edition of FHM's 100 World's Sexiest Women 2012.[11]
