To date, only ..., the 2004 United States Grand Prix, the 2004 Belgian Grand Prix, the 2006 Australian Grand Prix, the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix, the 2006 United States Grand Prix, the 2007 Bahrain Grand Prix, the 2008 Australian Grand Prix, the 2008 Spanish Grand Prix, the 2008 Turkish Grand Prix, the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix, the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix, the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix, the 2009 Brazilian Grand Prix, the 2010 Australian Grand Prix, the 2010 Chinese Grand Prix, the 2010 Monaco Grand Prix, the 2010 Japanese Grand Prix, the 2010 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 2011 Italian Grand Prix and the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix. The same procedure was also used in the restart of the 1994 Japanese Grand Prix. After rule change in 2005, the procedure has been applied every time as the race has been stopped and restarted again, a total of four times, the first time being in 2007 European Grand Prix.

To date, only the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix,[1] the 2009 Australian Grand Prix,[2] the 2009 Italian Grand Prix[3] and the 2010 Monaco Grand Prix have finished behind the safety car in Formula One.

Hamilton was unable to make his two-stop strategy work, despite charging away from the field from pole in the opening stint, but was on course for third ahead of Raikkonen and qualifying hero Sutil until his eleventh hour crash at the first Lesmo, which caused the race to finish behind the safety car.
