Arsen Bashirovich Kanokov (Kabardian: Къанокъуэ Арсен, Qanoque Arsen; Russian: Арсен Баширович Каноков; born February 22, 1957) is the president of the Kabardino-Balkaria republic in Russia.

Biography

Kanokov was born in Shitkhala, a village in Kabardino-Balkaria. He became a successful businessman in Moscow and a doctor of Economics. In December 2003 Kanokov became a member of the State Duma of Russia, elected on the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia list. Later he became a member of a pro-Putin United Russia party. While in the State Duma, Kanokov was a member of the Committee on Property.[1]

He became President of Kabardino-Balkaria in September 2005, having been appointed by Russian President, Vladimir Putin and confirmed by the local Parliament, by way of replacing the republic's long-time leader Valery Kokov who had resigned for health reasons.

Personal life

He is a Muslim, and he has three children. Kanokov.org is the official website of the political movement "Youth for Kanokov". This organization works toward unifying young people in Kabardino-Balkaria. It was founded by a famous internet mogul Mazukabzov.[2]
