Citing a reference

Finally, someone has shown me how to contact you. I'd like to thank you for your efforts to help me edit an edit and to cite a reference. Earlier today, however, I explored Teahouse and wrote there for help. Sorry to bother you but I've just got the three questions. Steve Ingham Inghams3 (talk) 02:43, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Answered on your talk page... Ariconte (talk) 02:44, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WLM

Hi Ariconte, I saw your feedback for the WLM mobile app. The countries available for uploading monuments are listed under "participating countries" on the main landing page (available from the Wikimedia Commons homepage and also from here: WP:WLM). Australia is not a participant, probably because there was no one to work on the lists, which is pretty labor intensive. I myself put a lot of effort into translating lists into the English Wikipedia for the Wallonian portion of Belgium, and to my delight I see that they are being used! I wish I had had time to do the Flemish ones, but that will be a project for next year. If you are interested in doing some lists in your area and need information how to do it, let me know (it's too late this year though). Jane (talk) 06:47, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback..... I still wonder why it does not just work, even if not part of the 'contest'. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 06:57, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure what you mean; do you mean the app just stops? When I choose "Browse countries", I see that Australia isn't listed, which is correct behavior. The "nearby" function will not work if there is nothing nearby. Jane (talk) 08:39, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I expected the app to allow me to take a picture and then upload it to commons with the matched time and GPS data. If that can be done, I don't know how. There don't seem to be any user instructions that are not related to the contest. Regards, Ariconte (talk) 08:42, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well of course that would not be possible, because without the infrastructure of having the identifier for the subject in an appropriate list, there is no basis for uploading content to Commons. The whole idea of the app is that the "encyclopedic content" rule is covered by the subject being in a "list of wanted objects". Otherwise people could upload their birthday party photos and so forth. You can match any picture to GPS data and timestamps, but that doesn't mean it is a photo worthy to be uploaded to Commons. Jane (talk) 11:23, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That is analgous to saying 'You can not crete an article in Wikipedia unless it is on a wanted articles list. There are lots of images in commons that were not on lists when the were uploaded. Confuses me, Ariconte (talk) 11:41, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Of course you are right in the sense that the app seems to be overly restrictive, and it would be great to have an app for the default upload wizard that adds your geocoordinates and timestamp (I think the default uploader does do that if your camera allows the geocoordinates to be sent through). I think the problem here is with perception about what the scope of the WLM app is: the WLM app is only for the contest, so each photo needs to be within the constraints of the contest, which by definition are the lists. Without the lists, no jury would be able to judge pictures in an orderly way, since they would have no way of knowing whether the object was in fact on a cultural heritage list or not. This problem is a catch-22 for many countries however. Germany has no central heritage agency, so only a few regions are participating. To make it seem less restrictive, they have allowed uploads without an identifier. Unfortunately I don't speak German, so I can't quite figure out how they manage this with the judging and everything. Jane (talk) 14:26, 11 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

That was quick, I think it was only two minutes that I submitted that... I left so as to avoid an editing war, as that's something one of the Wiki guides suggest when there's an issue. So, I hope this time around I can do a bit better... Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. JC.Torpey (talk) 04:17, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please refer to Wikipedia:NOT#NEWS. Until these comments can be shown to have an enduring impact, they are not encyclopedic. They can be inserted in a couple of days if they have received widespread criticism or led to a change in policy, but right now they are nothing more than a news piece.
