Syria News Channel (Arabic: الإخبارية السورية), also known as Al-Ikhbariya Syria is a privately owned[1] television station based in Damascus, Syria, launched in December 15, 2010. The network is known to be loyal to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.[1] The Channel is headed by Fouad Sharbaji, former general director of the SATRBC.

Armed attacks on Syria News Channel

On 12 June 2012, a car of the Syrian al-Ikhbariya TV became the target of an armed attack by a group of gunmen in the town of Al-Haffa near the city of Latakia. Al-Ikhbariya TV correspondent Mazen Mohammad was hit in his hand while cameraman Fadi Yakoub was hit in his chest. Both journalists were immediately admitted to the National Hospital in Latakia. According to journalist Mazen Mohammad, an armed group opened fire towards their car while trying to cover the events in Al-Haffa near the National Hospital.[2]

In the early morning of 27 June 2012, a group of gunmen attacked the main building of the Syria News Satellite Channel in the Damascus countryside.[3] Three staff members of the al-Ikhbariya Syria TV and four security guards were killed during the attack on the headquarters of the TV station.[4][5] The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) announced that the assailants had also ransacked the offices of the TV station during the attack that was carried out at the early hours of the day. The assailants stormed the offices of Al-Ikhbariya TV, planted explosives in the studios and blew them up along with the equipment.[6] Five buildings in the complex were destroyed in the attack.[1]

Journalists kidnaped by FSA

The armed forces freed in a "qualitative operation" the team of the Syrian al-Ikhbariya satellite channel who were kidnapped by an armed group seven days ago in Al-Tall area in Damascus Countryside. The released colleagues are Yara Saleh, Abdullah Tabreh and Hussam Imad.[7]

The stance of the Arab League

In June 2012, the Arab League had officially asked the satellite operators Arabsat and Nilesat to terminate the broadcast of all the Syrian TV stations, both state-owned and private channels, including the Syria News Channel.[8]

On 05 September 2012, Syrian Television Channels broadcast were broken off on Arabsat and Nilesat, including Syria News Channel.

Headquarters

A large studio in Dorusha and a smaller studio, which can be hooked up to the headquarters for down-the-line interviews, is located in Gomarek Square to accommodate live guests.[9]
