Jelena Genčić (Serbian Cyrillic: Јелена Генчић, born 9 October 1936 in Belgrade, Kingdom of Yugoslavia) is a Serbian retired tennis and handball player. After retiring from playing sports in mid 1970s she started a career as a tennis coach, an endeavour where she's had lots of success, discovering and coaching future great champions Novak Djokovic, Monica Seles, and Goran Ivanišević. [citation needed]

Parallel to sports, she graduated art history at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Philosophy and worked for decades as a television director at the state-owned television network TV Belgrade that eventually transformed into Radio Television of Serbia.[citation needed]

Early life

Born as one of seven siblings to Serbian father Jovan and Austrian mother Hermina, Jelena comes from a prominent Serbian family. Her grandfather Lazar Genčić studied medicine in Vienna before returning to Serbia and becoming the country's first surgeon. Following the outbreak of World War I, he took an active part in the Serbian war effort, surviving the gruelling conflict as a decorated veteran with the rank of general.[1] At the time of her birth, the family was very well-off with her grandfather running a hospital and his brother Đorđe Genčić performing the role of interior minister in the cabinet of Nikola Pašić.
