article on Interstate 3 and Interstate 14

The Federal Highway Administration has a website on section 1927 of the SAFETEA-LU which addressed a number of issues related to so-called I-3 and I-14.

Other Possibilities for Interstate 3 Designation

In California, CALTRANS has been upgrading US-101 to freeway standards between Los Angeles and San Francisco over the past 40 years. It is possible that the I-3 designation may be applied to this stretch of Highway 101 once it is completely upgraded to Interstate standards. Otherways, it might also be designated as Interstate 1.

Unless there is documented proof for the California use of I-3, I'd suggest leaving it out; especially since the Georgia use of I-3 is written into formal government legislation. --Mhking 23:52, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to disagree with you Mr. King. The actual language is on the www.fhwa... website and it does not use the phrase "I-3".

That's what I see too. It did not mention the designation, just the routing. However, there is no logical odd number available, apart from a southern extension of I-81 (with an I-75 multiplex). Being a diagonal route, an even number could work, but I-18 is the only one that would fit there, and that may come into use later (perhaps US-82 from I-69/Greenville to I-85/Montgomery?). Mentioning the possibility of its eventual number being 18 or 81 (which are cited from interstate-guide) might be useful, whether or not the west coast ultimately asks for I-3 for US 101 or some other route, because of the way the grid works. The idea of using 81 is interesting, although it would result in a three-route multiplex with I-75 and I-40 between the existing interchanges with I-75 and I-140 on I-40. There are other possibilities still out there as well; 32, 34, 36 or 38 (the route is entirely south of I-40, after all). 76.91.72.143 (talk) 06:30, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? Interstate protocol has the lower numbered odd highways in the far west of the continental U.S. Yet this article refers to plans to site an interstate designated Interstate 3 in the Southeast of the United States. The number 3 is derived from the highway being named after the Third Infantry Division, just as I-14, a part of the same bill, is named after the Fourteenth Amendment. Mellophonius (talk) 01:31, 13 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
