Etymology

Perhaps the word "bunian" is a corruption of "bunyian" i.e. "sounds", hence "orang bunyian" = "people of sounds/noises". The folklore often involves someone who went deep into the forest, and heard sounds coming from some distance. Enticed, he followed the sounds to discover it coming from an isolated village. The people spoke in archaic language and hospitable, and the person eventually blended in with the community, often marrying a "bunian" woman. After some time that felt like only a few days or weeks, he began to miss his family back home and traveled back to his real village, only to find out that he had been gone for a few years.
