Calian Technologies Ltd. is a Canadian company that was established in September 1982 by Larry O'Brien. Originally a consulting firm, Calian provided quality assurance services to both the private and public sectors across Canada. Since then, the company has expanded its capabilities to include staffing, outsourcing, and systems integration within the service lines of health, training, operations and maintenance, IT Professional services, systems engineering, and manufacturing.


History

Calian Technologies Ltd. (formerly known as Calian Technology Ltd.) was formed in September 1982 as an one person Ottawa-based consulting firm by former Ottawa mayor Larry O'Brien. Calian's original market focus was quality assurance consulting to technology companies.

The company went public in 1993 after the acquisition of SED Systems of Saskatoon.[1]

Ray Basler took over the position of CEO of the company when Larry O'Brien retired from the company in Feb 2005. At that time Larry O'Brien stayed on as Chairman of the Board of Directors.[2] Larry officially retired from that position on July 12, 2012. [3]

Operations

Calian Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Calian Technologies Ltd. and consists of three main divisions:

  • Systems Engineering Division (SED Systems)
  • Calian Business and Technology Services (BTS) Division
  • Calian Health (Primacy Management Inc.)

Calian Corporate Headquarters are co-located with the Calian BTS division in Ottawa, Ontario.

Business of the Company

Located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the SED Systems division plans, designs and implements solutions for space agencies, communications satellite manufacturers and operators. Calian's system engineering and manufacturing services are provided through SED Systems.

Operating from offices in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Kingston, Halifax, Oromocto, and Edmonton the Calian BTS division provides recruiting and workforce management solutions within the following four service lines:

  • Health Services
  • Information Technology Professional Services
  • Operations and Maintenance
  • Training


Calian Health provides medical and health services for both the government and private sectors across Canada. These services include (but are not limited to) hands-on clinical work (medical or dental), medical review and policy development or healthcare administrative services such as recruiting, accreditation and credential management.[7] With the acquisition of Primacy Management Inc., Calian Health also manages health clinics across the Loblaw Cos. Ltd. grocery chain.[8]

Calian is a "continuous improvement/business excellence organization". The internal Calian management system has been recognized by the National Quality Institute (NQI) of Canada (now Excellence Canada) with the gold level Canada Award of Excellence for Quality in 2006 [9] and the gold level Canada Award of Excellence in Healthy Workplace in 2009.[10]
