The Annex String Quartet is a string quartet founded by violist Yunior Lopez in 2008 in Toronto, Canada. Named after the The Annex neighbourhood in down town Toronto, the quartet began performing regularly throughout Toronto's many bars, coffee shops, and non-classical venues like Aroma Espresso Bar and the St. Lawrence Market, and have appeared throughout North Americas finest performance and festival venues. To date, the groups primary focus has been bridging the gap between classical and world music. They have performed, recorded, and ventured into various musical styles including instrumental and pop music from Cuba and the Middle East.

Close Associations

The Annex String Quartet has collaborated with an eclectic group of musicians from various genres and styles. In 2009, the group began working closely with Toronto-based pianist Peter Longworth. To date, they have appeared together on several occasions performing the piano quintets of Johannes Brahms and Antonín Dvořák.

In March 2010, the group joined two other string quartets to work alongside the Kronos Quartet and Pipa virtuoso Wu Man at the Weill Music Institute in Carnegie Hall. During the institute, the Annex worked closely with members of the Kronos Quartet performing music written for Kronos by composers Osvaldo Golijov, Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, and Terry Riley. On March 21, 2010, The Annex Quartet made their Carnegie debut performing works from the Kronos Quartet's repertoire list. In June 2011, David Harrington, founder of the Kronos Quartet, asked Annex to open for Kronos during their set at the 2011 Luminato Festival in down town Toronto.
