Tabas (Persian: طبس, also Romanized as Ţabas; formerly, Golshan or Gulshan)[1] is a city in and capital of Tabas County, South Khorasan Province, Iran.[2] At the 2006 census, its population was 30,681, in 7,962 families.[3]
Tabas is located in central Iran, 950 kilometers southeast of Tehran, in South Khorasan Province. At first, it was a part of the Khorasan province, but moved to Yazd Province in 2001.[4] Finally it is moved to South Khorasan Province in 2013.[2]
It is a desert city with lots of date and citrus trees. It has a 300 years old public garden, (Baghe-golshan) and the shrine of Ali ar-Ridha's brother, Hosein-Ibn-Mousa-Alkazem who is buried there. Tabas has two universities. The city has hot summers and people rarely see a winter snowfall.
The people of Tabas speak original Farsi that according to some experts is the way Persian people spoke centuries ago. The dialect sounds different from typical Farsi but is generally understood in Iran.
History
Tabas history dates back to a time before Islam reached Iran. It was an important outpost of Sassanid empire and during the Arab invasion it was considered the gate of entry to khorasan. It was spared the moguls attack on Iran and it had a local government incorporating not only Tabas, but also Ferdows and Gonabad. The failed rescue operation Operation Eagle Claw occurred near Tabas.
Tabas was stricken by a destructive earthquake on September 16, 1978 that left around 22,000 dead. The earthquake was measured between 7.5 and 7.9 on the Richter scale. Since then, the city has been rebuilt with many new streets, parks and public buildings.
Transport
Multiple bus lines, a railroad station and an airport connect tabas to mashhad, yazd ,Tehran, Kerman and Birjand, the capital city of South Khorasan province.
