Peter S. Hersh, MD is an Ophthalmologist and specialist in LASIK eye surgery and diseases of the cornea. He was lead author of the article in the journal Ophthalmology that presented the results of the study that led to the first FDA approval of the excimer laser for the correction of nearsightedness in the United States.

Education

Dr. Hersh graduated from [Princeton University]] with an A.B. in biochemistry. At Princeton, he was awarded the Senior Thesis prize for his work on messenger RNA. Dr. Hersh received his medical degree (M.D.) from Johns Hopkins. Dr. Hersh completed his residency training at Harvard Medical School where he was Chief Resident. He also completed a Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at Harvard.

Afterwards, Dr. Hersh remained on the full-time faculty at Harvard. In 1995 he founded the Cornea and Laser Eye Institute (CLEI), in New Jersey. CLEI is dedicated to clinical care and research in cornea and refractive surgery. Currently, in addition to directing the Cornea and Laser Eye Institute-Hersh Vision Group, he is a Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and Director of The Cornea and Refractive Surgery Division at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School[1] , and is a Visiting Research Collaborator at Princeton University[2] , in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. [3]

Career

As Director of [4] The Cornea and Laser Eye Institute, Dr. Hersh participated in nationwide clinical trials that led to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval of the excimer laser system for the correction of nearsightedness, and for the treatment of a variety of corneal diseases.[5] . He authored the study article that presented the results of the study that led to the first FDA appoval of the excimer laser for the correction of nearsightedness in the United States[6] .

Hersh's research is focused on develping new techniques and technologies in refractive and corneal surgery. Hersh is co-author of a patent regarding the use of short pulsed lasers for corneal surgery (#11/843,498) [7] and is the inventor of a number of surgical instruments used in corneal surgery, such as the Hersh Intralase Flap Spatula [8] His clinical interes are devoted to surgery, treatments including LASIK, femtosecond lsaer uses in LASIK and other corneal surgeries, LASEK/Photorefractive keratectomy, and CK (Conductive Keratoplasty), corneal inlays (Intacs), (Intacs[9] ) and Keratoconus[10]. Hersh has published more than 100 original articles and abstracts on these subjects. In addition, he has written or co-written four textbooks:

  • Ophthalmic Surgical Procedures (1998, 2nd ed 2009). Hersh PS, Zagelbaum B, Cremers SL. New York: Thieme Publishing, 2009 [11]
  • Refractive Surgery. Wu Hu, Steinert R, Thompson V, Slade S, Hersh PS. New York: Thieme Publishing 1998, 500 pp. [12]
  • Therapeutic Uses of the Excimer Laser for Corneal Disease. Hersh PS, Wagoner MD. New York: Thieme Publishing 1998, 161 pp. [13]
  • Eye Trauma. Shingleton B, Hersh PS and Kenyon KR. St. Louis: C.V. Mosby, 1991, 380 pp. [14]

Dr. Hersh was one of 2 investigators to present the Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) procedure to the FDA device panel[15] . This led to FDA approval of this procedure in 2002[16] . He expanded on these efforts in his thesis for admission to the American Ophthalmological Society entitled "Optics of Conductive Keratoplasty: Implications for Presbyopia Management".[17] He has also devised new applications of this technique to treat optical irregularities of the cornea.

With an interest in the optical disorders of the cornea, Dr. Hersh founded the subspecialty dedicated [18]CLEI Center for Keratoconus in 2002. Keratoconus is a disorder where the cornea (the surface lens of the eye) is inherently thinner and weaker than normal. This causes it to misshapen with loss of vision. Many patients with keratoconus ultimately require corneal transplatation.[19] Hersh has done extensive work with a procedure called corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL)[20] , which is designed to decrease the progression of keratoconus and corneal ectatic disorders. He has published numerous articles in opthalmology medical journals[21][22][23][24][25][26][27] analyzing the results this procedure for keratoconus and ectasia. Hersh participates in a number of research studies and clinical trials designed to improve keratoconus management. Hersh currenty is the U.S. medical monitor[28] of a new technique of crosslinking to manage keratoconus.

Dr. Hersh was elected to the American Ophthalmological Society[29] , the oldest and most prestigious eye surgery association in the country. He has also been awarded the Senior Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, an honor bestowed on fewer than 1% of eye surgeons, and is a past recipient of the Teacher of the Year Award from the Harvard Medical School Residency in Ophthalmology. He has been included in Best Doctors in America for over 10 years running[30] .
