Dr. Muhammad Farooq Sattar Peerwani (Urdu: فاروق ستار پیروانی) is a politician from Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. He is Deputy Convener and Parliamentary leader of the political party MQM. He has also served as Provincial Minister in the Sindh Cabinet for Local Bodies and is one of the senior Members of the MQM Co-Ordination Committee. Dr Farooq Sattar was also heading Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate.[1]
On 16 March 2008, he was nominated as Prime Minister of Pakistan candidate by the MQM.
Early Life
Farooq Sattar was born in Karachi, on April 9, 1959. His father was Adbul Sattar Noor Muhammad Peerwani.
Education
He received his degree in medicine MBBS from Sindh Medical College in 1986.
Personal Life
He is married with his two daughters and resides in Pir Ilahi Buksh Colony in Gulshan Town of Karachi.
Political Career
APMSO
He started his student political career with All Pakistan Mohajir Students Organization (APMSO) while he was a medical student at Sindh Medical College.
MQM
When political party MQM was formed, he joined alongwith other APMSO leaders, and to date he holds the position of Deputy Convener in this party. He is also a senior Members of the MQM Co-Ordination Committee and the parliamentarian leader of MQM in national assembly.
Mayorship of Karachi
In 1987, he was elected mayor of Karachi, and held the office until 1992. At the age of 28, he was the youngest to hold this position.[2]
National Politics
In 1998, while still the mayor of Karachi, he was elected as a member of National Assembly until its dissolution in 1990. He was then relected in 1990 until its dissolution again in 1992.
Politics of Sindh
In 1993 after MQM's decided to boycott national elections, but later contested provincial elections, Farooq Sattar entered provincial politics and was elected member of Sindh Provincial Assembly until its dissolution in 1996. He was then relected in 1997 until its dissolution again in 1998. He served as provincial minister for local bodies.
Return to Nation Politics
In February 2008, he returned to national politics by defeating Abdul Habib Memon of PPP by 30,000 votes in elections of national assembly. He holds this position to date and serves as Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis.
