Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are two new Pokémon games expected to be released in the Fall of 2006 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. They are the true RPG successors to Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire versions for the Game Boy Advance.
Project history
On October 7 2004, Diamond and Pearl were officially announced. Afterwards, information concerning the games was scarce. Little by little, Japanese manga magazine CoroCoro Comic unveiled details about several new Pokémon scheduled to make their debuts in the upcoming games, such as Munchlax, a pre-evolution of Snorlax, and Bonsly, pre-evolution to Sudowoodo. It was not until May 11 2006 that in-game screenshots were revealed.
Information and features
So far only a few new Pokémon and other bits of information have been revealed. The Japanese release is currently projected for the Fall of 2006; it is unknown when Diamond and Pearl will be available in North America, Europe, and Australia. CoroCoro recently gave Pokémon fans their first glimpse of Diamond and Pearl’s graphical style when it published a few screenshots, showcasing the game’s battle system, which uses more complex and detailed sprites, and the overworld, which mixes 2D and 3D elements, sporting a bright array of colors, all while maintaining the chibi style seen in previous editions. The following information has been gradually released through CoroCoro and other sources:
- Diamond and Pearl will take place in the region of Shinou (シンオウ Shin'ō,).
- The town in which the storyline begins is called Futaba Town (フタバタウン Futaba Taun).
- The games have been reported to use “all of the DS’s features” (such as the touchscreen and microphone). It is unknown whether or not the system’s internal clock and calendar will be utilized.
- Up to 16 players will be able to connect with the DS’s wireless capabilities, in a setup similar to the Union Room employed by Pokémon FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald when using the GBA Wireless Adapter.[1]
- Diamond and Pearl are reportedly compatible with all five Game Boy Advance Pokémon RPGs (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen) after fulfilling certain requirements.[2]
- There will be no new types, though there will be new type combinations (like Lucario, the first Steel/Fighting-type, and Perap, the first pure Flying-type).
- There will be many new Pokémon, including new evolutions and pre-evolutions of Pokémon of previous generations.
- There will be new moves for Pokémon to learn.

In other games
Munchlax and Bonsly make brief appearances in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, although they cannot be caught. In Pokémon Dash!, a Pokémon-themed racing game for the Nintendo DS, Munchlax is one of fifteen playable characters in multi-player mode, and players at the World’s Hobby Fair in Japan and the opening of Nintendo World in America were able to download a Munchlax-shaped course.[3] Lucario, Bonsly, Manene, and Manyula appear as collectible statues in Pokémon Mysterious Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team. In Pokémon Ranger, players can obtain Manaphy’s egg by completing a mission obtained at a Nintendo event. The egg cannot be hatched in Ranger; it must be sent to a copy of either Diamond or Pearl.[4]
In the anime
May, a main character of the Pokémon anime, captures a Munchlax in Episode #392: “Berry, Berry Interesting”.[5] Brock, another main character, obtains a Bonsly in “Bonsly and the Ninja School!”, which has yet to air in North America.[6] James, one of the show’s antagonists, captures a Manene in another episode not yet aired in North America, “Manene Enters: House of Relaxation!”[7] Lucario and Manyula appeared in the introduction sequence of Season 8, but were cut out in recent American airings.
In the films
Munchlax appears in the 7th and 8th Pokémon Movies, Pokémon: Destiny Deoxys and Pokémon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Lucario, Bonsly, Manene, and Manyula also appear in the 8th Pokémon Movie.[8] Manaphy, Tamanta, Perap, and Buoysel are set to appear in the 9th Pokémon Movie, Pokémon Ranger and the Prince of the Sea: Manaphy.[citation needed]
New techniques
Continuing in the trend established in the second and third generations, Diamond and Pearl will introduce a slew of new moves for Pokémon to learn. CoroCoro held a contest in which they revealed the details of a new attack and invited readers to name it. The winning name was recently announced, making it the first official new move of the 4th Generation.
Name | PP | Power | Accuracy | Type | Effect |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Meteoric Swarm | 5 | 140 | 90 | Dragon | User’s Special Attack sharply falls to deal lots of damage, which causes successive attacks to do much less damage. Analogous to the Fire-type move Overheat and Psychic move Psycho Boost. |
Other new moves have yet to be revealed.
Trivia
- Pokémon Diamond was also the name of an unauthorized bootleg version of the Japanese Game Boy Color game Telefang.
