Vathikuchi (English:Matchstick) is a 2013 Indian Tamil urban thriller film written and directed by newcomer Kinslin and A. R. Murugadoss is producing this film in association with Fox Star Studios starring his brother Dileepan and Anjali in the lead roles.[1] Music is composed by M Ghibran. A. R. Murugadoss has decided to release the trailer of this film during the screening of Thuppakki.[2]

Production

After winning accolades for her performance as a chirpy young nurse in Engaeyum Eppothum, Anjali has once again been signed up by producer A R Murugadoss for the movie Vatthikuchi.[16] Impressed with M Ghibran's score in Vaagai Sooda Vaa, both Murugadoss and Kinslin unanimously decided to have him on board for this film.[17] Murugadoss has apparently zeroed in on the title 'Vathikuchi' from the chartbuster number 'Vathikuchi pathikadhuda...'[18]

The film is set in Chennai and is about the people living in the outskirts of Chennai who travel for more than 30 km to reach Chennai and travel using the share autos. Dileepan plays a share auto driver and Anjali plays a tough girl, who travels using these share autos. She plays a middle class girl Meena who changes her name as Leena and roams around in the city malls and coffee shops, pretending as if leading a higher lifestyle than what she actually does. The film also sees Vatsan in a pivotal role.Crime news is full of rapes and crime committed by auto drivers.but still South Indian directors would show These Auto drivers as heroes.[19]

The film's score and soundtrack are composed by M Ghibran. The soundtrack was released on February 13th 2013, to positive reviews.[20] [21]

Karthik Srinivasan from milliblog.com gave 200 and commented that "It’s hard to believe that Vathikuchi is just Gibran’s second film. After an impressive debut like Vaagai Sooda Vaa, this is a fantastic sophomore effort from this talented composer!" [22] indiaglitz.com gave 4 out of 5 and wrote that, "Even if this album is not a sensation, everybody is bound to carry the repertoire to their shower, and hum these numbers all through the day, for these songs, certainly leave a lasting impression. Four voices, four lyricists, few strings, some beats and keys, and one young man behind them all - this is yet another musical magic from Ghibran"[23] Richard Mahesh from top10cinema.com wrote "Gibran creates a new magic after the success of his maiden debut Vaagai Sooda vaa."[24] Ravie Lakshmanan from therarefied.blogspot.in/ wrote "M. Ghibran's musical prowess is on full show in Vathikuchi. A must listen soundtrack for the musically inclined; Ghibran, take a bow!"[25]

Critical Reception

Vathikuchi received mixed to positive reviews from critics. Vivek Ramz from in.com rated it 3 out of 5 and stated that Vathikuchi is more brawny than brainy. He added that Director Kinslin shows promise in his debut film with different treatment for this somewhat cliched story. His way of storytelling is realistic at times with very grounded level approach towards a common man issue. The problem with the film is that he has introduced too many characters and made few simple situations more complex which works at times and at other times backfired. Finally concluding that it's not a bad film at all and can be watched once![26] Tikkview.com gives 3/5 for Vathikuchi. and their review says that "Usual story line.We may seen this story in many movies.But narration style is really good."[27] Indiaglitz says "Economic ride jarred by minor speedbrakers, yet reaches the destination on time!". [28]
