The Wikipad is an enterprise and video gaming tablet, running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), from an independent Los Angeles-based company called Wikipad, Inc. It was first shown at CES 2012 in January and was slated to be released on October 31, 2012[1] through GameStop, Walmart, Amazon.com, Target, and Best Buy. The tablet will be aimed at gaming and features a detachable controller with dual-analog sticks.
The Wikipad is able to get thousands of games from the Google Play library, as well as original PlayStation titles via PlayStation Mobile, and games streamed from Gaikai. The new version of the tablet will debut Spring 2013 at USD $249 with a 7" screen, NVIDIA Tegra mobile processor with quad-core CPU and 5th battery-saver core and high-performance 12-core NVIDIA GPU, built-in 16GB flash memory with MicroSD slot that supports up to 32GB, and has one 2MP front camera.[2]
History
At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 10, 2012, the Wikipad (then called 'WikiPad) was shown. It was a glasses-free 3D-enabled device (although now, 3D is not mentioned anymore on Wikipad's website so therefore has been possibly scrapped). It originally had an 8" screen with 8GB flash memory, while now it has become 10.1" and 16GB instead.[3] It also originally had an unknown 1.2 GHz CPU, while now it is a 1.4 GHz Nvidia Tegra. Also, the price was announced as US$249, but the actual final price will be US$499.[4] Wikipad was originally cited for a October 2012 release, but the company continued works on the tablet and so was delayed.
In May 2012, Gaikai, who were recently purchased by Sony, partnered with Wikipad, Inc. to integrate its streaming service to the tablet.[5]
On September 6, 2012, Wikipad came to the press with an all-new design, new logo, and the final announcements of the specs, as well as the release date of October 31.[6]On September 26, 2012, Wikipad's president of sales, Fraser Townsley, said that cloud streaming service OnLive will also come to the Wikipad, along with Gaikai.[7]On its original launch day, Wikipad was delayed due to 'minor refinement' and last-minute tweaks.[8] Wikipad eventually launched successfully on the 11th June 2013 at a price of $249 with the same specifications as the 10 inch tablet but in a 7 inch form factor.
On February 2013, Wikipad was revamped and featured a 7 inch screen instead of the original 10.1 inch screen. The Wikipad was launched to the market on the 11th June 2013 on the eve of E3 convention in Los Angeles. The Wikipad is the only tablet to possess both the unique combination of a console quality gaming experience with the functionality and portability of a tablet thanks to its award-winning (Good Design Award) and patented detachable dual-analog controller. The Wikipad specs offer a multi capacitive 7 inch touch screen, 16 GB memory with an additional micro SD slot to support a further 32 GB of storage, together with micro USB, GPS, accelerometer and gyroscope. The tablets ultra-light and thin chassis is powered by the NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 quad-core mobile processor that's optimized for cloud gaming with a 12 core Nvidia GPU. With an aspect ratio of 16:10, a 2-mega-pixel front facing camera the Wikipad tablet offers true widescreen HD display and HDMI out.Consumers have instant access to entertainment and videogame content of over 700,000 apps from Google Play from Google Mobile Services, PlayStation®Mobile games from Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., and TegraZone – NVIDIA's free app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor. When the gamepad controller is detached, Wikipad’s sleek design and full Android 4.1 Jelly Bean functionality make it a powerfully versatile tablet for surfing the web, emailing, enjoying all the latest films, books, magazines and music, conversing via Skype or experiencing the latest apps at home or on the go. The Wikipad additionally comes pre loaded with console-quality multi player game ShadowGun and multi award winning (Best Android App) FPS Dead Trigger. Wikipad additionally comes pre loaded with Hockey Nations for the sports fan.
The new specs are a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor, a 7-inch IPS display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and 16GB of memory expandable up to 32GB via microSD[10]
Controller
The Wikipad features a detachable controller [11] with dual analog sticks along with regular gaming keys and shoulder buttons - a design similar to the Wii U GamePad. It is a fully functioning high specification tablet when the controller is detached. The particular design of the controller is patented and thus competitor's control schemes will be slightly different..[12]
Software
The Wikipad is able to stream video games from the cloud-based Gaikai service. It is also a PlayStation Certified device, meaning that console quality PlayStation titles from the PlayStation library will be available too.[13] The Wikipad will also have access to Google Play - that library contains thousands of Android games including a growing number optimized for Tegra 3 such as Shadowgun, Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto III, which are developed to take full advantage of the Tegra 3's graphics capabilities.[14]
Hardware
The Wikipad has a 1.4 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 T30S quad-core CPU processor. It weighs 560 grams and is 8.6 mm thick.[15] The 7-inch touchscreen has a resolution of 1280×800 (with HD 1080p), with a ratio of 16:10. The screen has Gorilla® scratch-resistant technology.
Wikipad also has a 2-megapixel front camera[16] that allows video calling with services such as Skype.
