A rapidly expanding subset of popular culture studies, Buffy Studies is concerned with the scholarly study and exploration of Joss Whedon's popular television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and, to a lesser extent, Whedon's other works. Since the show's 1997 debut, dozens of books and hundreds of scholarly articles have appeared which examine its themes from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives including sociology, psychology, theology, and women's studies.
