Bombardment of Cherbourg

Thanks for looking into rating the Bombardment of Cherbourg. I took the naval mission to be support of the army infantry occupation of Cherbourg as a port of supply for a breakout. Although i believe the article to be well sourced, some editors comments or edits have apparently objected from a naval view, resisting my framing the article as an early combined services, combined arms operation supporting army infantry assault. Others have objected to my giving the infantry short shrift. Yet others have truncated the section featuring destroyers, -- though the destroyers are carefully sourced as the most effective close infantry support. One sought to drop picturing army air corps contribution to the navy-and-air corps support of the infantry (naval spotters, relaying ground-spotter reports and tactical bombers).

Some issues I do not know how to source into the narrative. Most vessels holed would have been disabled or sunk, had German munitions not been sabotaged by the slave labor manufacturing it, --but I have not found a direct quote for that observation related to this action. I fear anything on that subject cannot be admitted to the article, --there is only a British admiral's observation that losses of capital ships might be very high in future naval operations of the kind.

I acknowledge WP is a collaborative effort, so my subsequent edits to each of these visits has been to try to thread the needle, accepting the substance of each contribution without sacrificing the broader treatment. I would welcome further amendments to improve the article to qualify for Good Article status. Thanks in advance. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 12:28, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The battle of Cherbourg, was mainly fought at sea with Allied destroyers and cruisers shelling the German fortifications, that's why we call it a "bombardment". But the bombardment was a precursor to the allied invasion, so it would be key to add some of the infantry content because their success on the ground also means that the bombardment itself was a success. --Remember that this bombardment also had support from the air, B-17's and B-24's from England flew there prior to the ships--. For the editors that oppose that view, I would start an RFC on that, so if an editor does not agree with something for example infantry short removal; this would help reach a consensus and make my review a lot easier. I see that you have tried doing that but nobody really commented, I would put an RFC template on the talk page so you can get the other users to reply
I agree with that, the German artillery guns would have the potential to destroy a large chunk of the fleet, but with poor manufacturing, means a critical flaw. If you can get that quote from the British admiral in MOTD form that would be great, to add in on the article. Some parts of the article like the back ground section could require some inline sources, for example "Once the Allied assault at Normandy was assessed as the primary invasion, German commanders sought to limit the lodgment preparatory to a counter offensive. To preserve naval assets, the Cherbourg-based German E-boats were transferred to Saint-Malo. Four destroyers out of Brest tried to make for Cherbourg to follow the E-boats, but they were sunk or disabled." (Taken from the article) that entire section is missing a source to verify if that claim is true.
At this moment it looks fine for GA review, but I personally would do the A-Class review first, then the GA. There are some disputes going on whether what should go on the article and what shouldn't, in this case, you are the only editor that took the initiative to bring it to the talk page, start an RFC to get everyones opinion on whether what should be there and what shouldn't. Thanks. Prabash.Akmeemana 13:30, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the encouragement. You picture a more interactive, collaborative process in the military community than I have found elsewhere. I found the experience essentially one of write, then drive by amendment, then rewrite on my part.
I agree to try for A status first, I somehow missed the sequencing-- I am ambitious to develop as a writer since I find wiki-fencing elsewhere singularly unsatisfying. I will re-read the pages. I like the idea of expanding the article further, adding prior B-17 and B-24 activity, which both aided infantry advance but necessarily disrupted command and control, distribution and allocations of German manpower and materiel for seaward assets as well. Additionally, I'd like to add the recon mission of the USS Hartford (spelling?) destroyer running under the German batteries, that, with an Army spotter plane, provoked camouflaged German batteries to open fire and so disclose their positions. I got side-tracked trying to find the AAC squadron which might have assigned the spotter mission... I'll see if I cannot reconstruct the inline sourcing, I find those who cut text sometimes cut references in the over-write. Thanks again. TheVirginiaHistorian (talk) 11:28, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!

I am back from holidays and I have a huge idea for you and me to work in together... Working on this to take it to GA. What do you say? :) Miss Bono [zootalk] 13:52, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I will start it 12:30PM your time, By the way how was your vacation Miss Bono? Prabash.Akmeemana 14:00, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty cool, thanks for asking. I went to a night club called The Yellow Submarine, on Saturday. Cool music and a live band performed. We were just in fornt of them. They played a lot of awesome songs, the best of them: House of The Rising Song. The premises are quite large and welcoming. Plenty of references to The Beatles on the walls... :) Cool! The lead guitarist lent me the guitar to take a picture with it. It was a BC Rich. I also went to the John Lennon's park and took a picture with him ;) Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:14, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.
Best,
Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:07, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great, the article looks good for GA, it just needs to be fleshed out a bit more. Prabash.Akmeemana 19:32, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great, when we start? Miss Bono [zootalk] 19:38, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Im going to start as soon as I'm done lunch, but I take that you wont be on after that, so it will be today for me, but because you are going home after work, it will be tomorrow for you. Prabash.Akmeemana 19:42, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I thought you said once that you and I edited in the same time zone. Do you lunch after 4:00pm o'clock? Miss Bono [zootalk] 19:45, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What should I do? Miss Bono [zootalk] 19:57, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was thinking the same thing, I will help expand and you can help. Can you get another editor to help us? Prabash.Akmeemana 20:02, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Let's ask TheOriginalSoni and Cullen328 What do you think? Miss Bono [zootalk] 20:04, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Pjoef and I are working on this. It is pretty fun. We don't know yet which month will be for, but I like designing. What do you think of it so far? We are looking for suggestions and ideas from the other members of the WP. Miss Bono [zootalk] 20:07, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You both have great graphic designing skills, I personally think the newsletter should be a lot smaller, look at the bugle and the signpost; they are short, simple and simpler. If you need help distributing content for U2, I can get a bot to do it for you! Prabash.Akmeemana 20:12, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, we have one (I mean a bot). How can I get the NWL smaller? Miss Bono [zootalk] 20:14, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps, instead of showing every single detail, put some of it into links instead, I will demonstrate how in a bit. Prabash.Akmeemana 20:17, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great!. In the meantime, I will ask Cullen if he can help with VTour :) Miss Bono [zootalk] 20:19, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes Cullen is a prolific editor he might be busy, I will tell Soni about it ASAP. Prabash.Akmeemana 20:22, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Don't forget to show me how make the nwl saller. Miss Bono [zootalk] 20:24, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Does soni said something about helping us?? Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:30, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Soni is at college nowadays so he won't be as on frequently.. I don't want to bother him, unless its urgent. Prabash.Akmeemana 14:36, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
He won't talk me anymore. I remember those times when we became very close and he told me about college exam and stuffs... I am happy that he finally passed the exams and he is in college now. But in July? Isn't vacations?? I'll be taking college exams on May 2014 and hopefully enrolling in the Faculty of Sociology on Sep 2014. Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:44, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thats not of him to be that way, during his exams he was a prolific and active editor until WorldTraveller101 attacked him. After that day he hasn't been active at all. Then WT101 gets blocked for three monthsPrabash.Akmeemana 14:50, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But what exactly did WT101 tell to him? Miss Bono [zootalk] 14:55, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Laura he said this. ;( Prabash.Akmeemana 14:59, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
