All those who lived in the Canton of Sembe(1) in 1940’s will remember that Charles Zakama “ Biel ”(2) was a man without equal: a hero. His courage, his leadership, and contribution to develop his community made him a model of heroism, which is rare nowadays in African lands. In the earliest days after World War II - he should be 21 years old - he succeeded his uncle Daago Djieb’Tah-Moh-Lena as the Head of “Kwel” tribe. He was immediately recognized by the colonial Administration as the native Chief of Canton. Soon after, he started working hard: he went from village to village, urging people and advocating for the cultivation of rice(3), cocoa, and gum-tree. He pleaded for the construction of the public school and infirmary and got both of them. Simultaneously, in any large village, he organized a team of roadmen for the maintenance of the roads. He had no car; he caught neither buses nor trains or planes; he simply walked. When back home, he was in charge of the Canton Court. Mainly, he created the “double-dowry” customary law(4). He looked after the cleanliness of Sembe-Les-Collines(5), which he loved as his own property. He visited the sick people and the wise men, and he donated food and other necessary supplies to the people in need. He encouraged young men and ladies to more participation in the Canton’s activities. He was everywhere his duty called him. Moreover, Charles Zakama “ Biel ” had a great family whose he took care of as well as he managed his Canton. Biel’s works should be easier without this dilemma: the hard pressure from colonial Administration that thought he was not doing enough to make people work harder, and the native’s resistance to the French colonization. He faced this conflict with calm and confidence. To the French colons, he used the diplomatic weapon, calling them to less oppression, more respect and patience; to the natives, he argued that only the virtues of labor should lead them to more autonomy. He did not think that colonization was essentially a positive system, but he was convinced that together, in a smart coexistence, French colons and native population could build a better life. He fought for that goal, and he died to reach it. Nowadays, no History manual has mentioned his unforgettable works, and no memorial has been built for his remembrance. In spite of this lack, I recognize that he was a man apart. As a chief, I admired him. As a father, I’m proud to be his son. Eternally, he is my hero.___________________________________________________________________ Notes : (1)- Sembe is located in the northern part of Congo-Brazzaville, near the borders with Cameroon and Gabon. (2)- Biel was his nickname meaning “Eagle” in Kwel dialect. (3)- Sembe was exporting a good quality rice to France (4)- Every man who decides to get a married-woman should reimburse the double of money and goods the former husband invested to marry that lady. That successful law contributed to diminish the number of divorces in the Canton. (5)- Sembe-Les-Collines is the main town in the Canton of Sembe. Declined.
