Main characters

Daphne Paloma Vasquez

Played by Katie Leclerc, Daphne is the deaf legal daughter of Angelo Sorrento and Regina Vasquez, and John and Kathryn's Kennish biological daughter. Daphne lost her hearing at a young age due to meningitis and is able to hear slightly with the help of hearing aids. In the episode "American Gothic," she goes on a date with Liam Lupo, but leaves after his friends show up and make fun of her. The two later make up in the following episode, and make their relationship official in the episode "Dance Amongst Daggers." By the end of the episode, however, Daphne breaks up with Liam to save her relationship with Bay. It is revealed in "American Gothic" that Daphne likes Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, and T-Pain and is agnostic.

Daphne is best friends with fellow deaf classmate Emmett Bledsoe, who drives her to school every day on his motorcycle. It is clear that Emmett has a crush on Daphne, but she is unaware of this. In the episode "Dance Amongst Daggers," they have a fight that ends with Emmett leaving the Kennishes' house in anger. However, they make up in the following episode. Daphne is also close with Ty, a boy from her neighborhood, and says that he is "like her big brother." It is revealed in the episode "Portrait of My Father" that Daphne's father abandoned her and Regina when she was little. In episode "Dogs Playing Poker," she admits that she, along with Emmett, are good at playing poker due to being extra aware of body movements. This leads Toby to have them help him get out of debt with his friend Wilke. Unfortunately, Daphne misreads Wilke's intentions and gets Toby into deeper financial troubles. It is later revealed that Daphne had a crush on Emmett, but it was too little too late as Emmett had already begun a relationship with Bay and firmly stated he'd be faithful to her.

Shortly after, she begins a relationship with Wilke, only to have it end when he is sent to boarding school in "Venus, Cupid, Folly, and Time." She is a Pescetarian. In "The Declaration Of Independence", Daphne struggle to decipher her boss's Jeff's signals when she begins to go out with him. In We are the Kraken of Our Own Sinking Ships a coworker asks Daphne to lie to Jeff to save his own skin when he makes a mistake during cooking. In The Trial Daphne and Jeff's relationship encounters obstacles and they end up sleeping together. Jeff end the relationship with Daphne. In "Street Noises Invade the House", Daphne and Bay reminisce about their lives the day before they found out they were switched mentioning how they must have seen each other before at a familiar pizza place. She questions her whole upbringing, as she tries to integrate herself into the life she would've had with Regina. She becomes attracted to Ty, an old friend of Daphne and Regina's, and they start a relationship in the second episode. She often clashes with Daphne, especially when it comes to Daphne's relationship with Liam (her ex-boyfriend). She is described as a drama queen, and isn't afraid to use whatever she has to get what she wants and is not afraid to say what ever she wants. She is curious about her biological father, and tries to find out who he is. They are reunited in "The Homecoming" and Bay is eager to get to know him, against the wishes of her parents and Regina.

In the episode "Dogs Playing Poker," Bay gets caught sneaking around with Ty, which leads to her parents inviting him over for dinner. He reveals that he enlisted in the army, much to Bay's unhappiness. Bay gives him a painting of her trademark "Axe Girl" in an army helmet. The two almost end up sleeping together, but Bay refuses, insisting that she just came to say goodbye, and leaves the house in tears.

Later, she begins a relationship with Daphne's best friend, Emmett. The two have a turbulent relationship due to their differences, but, Bay breaks up with Emmett after she finds out that he made love to her ex-best friend Simone, who was also Toby's girlfriend at the time of the fling.

In "This is the Color of My Dreams," Bay comes home from her trip during her summer with a new boyfriend named Alex and seems to be genuinely happily. However, things do not last long between them after it becomes clear that Bay is still not over Emmett. Her feelings become more complicated when she sees a mural Emmett painted of their relationship - with hopes of eventually making up - and this leads to her breaking it off with Alex. Bay and Emmett eventually meet up and Emmett tells Bay he is deeply sorry about what happened between him and Simone, and that it meant nothing to either of them. Despite his sincere and heart felt apology, Bay doesn't think they will ever be the same, although Emmett has still clearly not lost all hope.

In "We Are the Kraken of Our Own Sinking Ships," Bay gets a call from her new friend Zarra, a street artist, during a dinner with Alex's parents. Zarra ask Bay to bail her out of jail. Bay then drags Alex along with her as she tries to put together the $1,500 needed. She ends up stealing money from her father's safe in an act of desperation. She soon finds out that Zarra lied to her and got her to pay for her friend's bail out as well - without telling her that was why the money was so high - and walks off supposedly promising to pay her back the money (although it is implied she does not mean it). Thus leaving Bay to pay back the money she stole from her father on her own.

In "The Trial," Bay tries to return the cash she stole from John's business safe. By the end of the episode Bay moves out of the house and goes to live with Zarra after a fight with John and Kathryn.

In "Street Noises Invade the House", Bay runs into Emmett right before she leaves the house and he picks up on her intentions. Emmett asks to go with John to find Bay. Emmett finds Bay sleeping in the back of her car at an abandoned parking lot. Bay and Emmett share a moment in which Bay realizes that Emmett really cares about her. They almost kiss, until John drives away and Emmett asks Bay if he could ride back with her. She signs sure.

In The Door to Freedom Bay is accused of cheating on her French exam and decides to attend Carlton. Bay finds out about Angelo's secret: he got a woman pregnant.

In Tight Rope Walker Bay tells Zain that Regina is an alcoholic. Regina confronts Bay about telling Zain about her being an alcoholic and angrily scolds her for it. Bay, severely hurt, forgives Regina for her outburst after she comes to her room to apologize, the two then decide to keep it secret and Regina promises to go back to her classes and get help.

In "Human/Need/Desire Bay reveals her true feelings to Noah and they share an intense kiss in which starts off their new and exhilarating relationship as boyfriend and girlfriend at Carlton.

In "Introducing the Miracle" Bay breaks up with Noah- her short term boyfriend when she realizes that he clearly has feelings for Daphne.

In the latter half of season two, Bay and Ty meet by coincidence, in an Amusement park Bay then gets a job at. The two begin to 'hang-out' as friends, and Bay expresses her concern for Ty's mental well-being. Bay's feelings for Ty slowly begin to rekindle, though she does not allow herself to fall for Ty after having her heart broken by (and still belonging to) Emmett.

In "Distorted House" Bay move in with Regina and Angelo, and they form a strong family bond and Bay gets to know her biological parents, and begin to behave as a real family, much to Kathryn and Daphne's dismay.

She doesn't hesitate, however, when she sees that the two are trying to co-parent Daphne, insisting that Daphne is hers.

By the end of episode "Dance Amongst Daggers," Regina has accepted the invitation to go on a date with a guy she met at the Kennishes' fundraiser. Regina is an atheist. She is upset when her ex-boyfriend, Angelo, returns to try and work a relationship with their biological daughter, Bay, since she believes that he left because of Daphne's meningitis diagnosis. She agrees to be his business partner in order to open up her dream salon, but refuses to take him back, as she is in a relationship with Patrick, an art gallery owner.

Later on, however, Regina decides to marry Angelo to keep him from being deported. When she tells Patrick, he is furious and breaks off their relationship. In "Street Noises Invade the House" Regina gets half of Angelo's money because she's married to him.
