Insurance Hotline is a Canadian online insurance rate comparison service that directs consumers to insurance companies and professionals to assist consumers in getting lower rates on car insurance, as well as home insurance, motorcycle insurance and life insurance.
Overview
When the website is accessed, insurance consumers complete online form, answering the same basic questions asked by most insurance brokers and agents, with the process typically taking 5 and 10 minutes. All personal information submitted are secure and protected. Afterwards, Insurance Hotline runs the information against its database of over 30 insurance companies to determine the lowest rate offered through its large network of licensed insurance professionals, which is then presented to the consumer.[2]
Acquisition
In February 2007, the company was acquired by Star Media Group and Metroland Media Group, both owned by Toronto Star publisher Torstar Corp.[3] Later, in 2012, insurance quote comparison company Kanetix Ltd. has acquired Insurance Hotline for an undisclosed amount from subsidiaries of Torstar Corp., whose subsidiaries previously owned Insurance Hotline’s sites. Tornstar will hold a minority stake in the new combined entity.[4]
ComparaSave
In July 2012, Insurance Hotline launched ComparaSave, a website rating service which offers rate comparison features as well as well-established companies in that field, such as RateHub and RateSupermarket.[5]
Trivia
The company studied 100,000 North American driving records from the past six years and found that Libras, Aquarians and Aries are the worst overall signs when it comes to traffic offenses and accidents. Leo, Gemini and Cancer drivers were found to be among the best drivers.[6]
In 2012, Insurance Hotline polled Canadian drivers to uncover their driving habits.[7] The survey found that single people are twice as likely to get a ticket or get into an accident than those who are married.[8] On the other hand, common-law couples reported even fewer accidents than those who are married.[9] According to the study, married people make up 14% cent of all tickets receivers covered in the study, and based on sample data mainly from Ontario, Alberta and the Atlantic provinces. Divorced drivers received 18 per cent, singles 20.8%, and common-law partners 6.5%.[10]
