Gianni Nunnari (born 10 August 1959) is an Italian film producer and executive.

Executive Affiliation and Career

Gianni Nunnari is president, founder and CEO of Hollywood Gang Productions, a film production company located on the studio lot of Warner Brothers Pictures. Hollywood Gang has a first look deal with Warner Brothers Motion Picture Group and follows a philosophy of filmmaking that focuses on locally based international productions with worldwide commercial appeal. Mr. Nunnari regularly collaborates with some of the best directing talent in show business, such as Martin Scorsese, Zack Snyder, Tarsem Singh[1] and Oliver Stone. To date, Mr. Nunnari’s work accounts for more than $1.8 Billion in Worldwide Box Office.

Early Career

From 1987 to 2007, Mr. Nunnari served as president and co-founder of C.G. Pictures.[citation needed] C.G. Pictures served as the US production and distribution arm of the Italian-based entertainment and media conglomerate of Cecchi Gori Fin. Ma. Vi.[citation needed] In addition to spearheading all US activities for CG Fin Ma Vi, Mr. Nunnari helped to form Penta Pictures, a joint venture with Silvio Berlusconi, the ex-Prime Minister of Italy.[citation needed] During his tenure at CGP, a series of Italian films were produced like Mediterraneo, a small-budget “European-style” Italian-language film.[citation needed] Due in large measure to Mr. Nunnari’s efforts, Mediterraneo was sold to Miramax and distributed world-wide.[citation needed] It subsequently earned the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.[2]

International Acclaim

Mr. Nunnari and his longtime friend Massimo Troisi, a Neapolitan film star primarily known for his peculiar comedic approach in film, developed the idea for Massimo to direct and star in Il Postino. Again, the formula worked. Il Postino was successful worldwide, both artistically and financially. The film won an Academy Award, and was nominated for four more including Best Picture. Mr. Nunnari’s most notable success in this strategy of foreign films for the US market was Life Is Beautiful directed by and starring Roberto Benigni. Mr. Nunnari orchestrated the distribution of the film worldwide through Miramax, and the film produced not only artistic success, but was a genuine “hit”.[citation needed] The film won multiple awards, including the Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Dramatic Score.[3] Mr. Nunnari himself was honored as producer of the year at the 2013 Ischia Global Fest.[4][5]

Box Office Success

Mr. Nunnari has developed and produced many other mainstream Hollywood movies, including Se7en starring Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey[6] and From Dusk Till Dawn starring George Clooney, as well as Juliette Lewis, Harvey Keitel and Quentin Tarantino.[7] Gianni Nunnari also developed a film based on Alexander the Great and produced the 2004 epic Alexander directed by Oliver Stone, starring Anthony Hopkins, Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer.[8]

In 2006, Mr. Nunnari produced Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning The Departed[9]. The film starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. It was the most profitable R-rated release of 2006, was lauded by critics, and was later recognized with five Academy Award nominations. The film won four of those five awards, including the coveted Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.[10] This marked Martin Scorsese’s first Academy Award for achievement as a director.[citation needed]

Around the same time, Gianni Nunnari discovered the Frank Miller graphic novel that led to the Warner Brothers blockbuster 300. Mr. Nunnari developed and produced the ancient Greek action epic, which was helmed by visionary director, Zack Snyder, and starred Gerard Butler, Lena Headey, Michael Fassbender and Rodrigo Santoro.[11] To date, 300 has global sales of approximately $700 million.[citation needed] The film was the most successful domestic March theatrical opening in history, and grossed $300 million in just twenty-two days.[citation needed]

Mr. Nunnari continued his relationship with Martin Scorsese in 2010, when he Executive-produced the director’s psychological thriller Shutter Island.[12] The film starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Michelle Williams, Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley. Shutter Island marked Scorsese’s most successful opening weekend at the Box Office.[citation needed] To date, the movie has earned $300 Million worldwide, making it Martin Scorsese’s most profitable film ever.[citation needed]

Most recently, in Nov. 2011, Mr. Nunnari produced another mythological epic blockbuster, Immortals[13]. The film starred Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and Freida Pinto and was helmed by visionary director Tarsem Singh. It has grossed more than $230,000,000 worldwide.[citation needed] In total, Gianni Nunnari’s work accounts for more than $1.8 Billion in Worldwide Box Office Grosses and eighteen Academy Award nominations.[citation needed]
