1100 Architect is the New York and Frankfurt-based architectural firm of principals David Piscuskas, FAIA, LEED AP and Juergen Riehm, FAIA, BDA.[1] 1100 provides architectural design, programming, space analysis, interior design, and master planning services to public and private clients. The firm’s domestic and international work spans a vast array of typologies, including educational and arts institutions, libraries, offices, residences, retail environments, and civic facilities.[2] Since 2014, the firm has a team of over 40 professionals including registered architects and LEED accredited professionals.[3]

1100 Architect was founded in 1983 as a SoHo-based start-up design studio of three architecture school graduates with a shared commitment towards design excellence.[4] With experience designing for a wide range of typologies and clients, 1100 Architect’s design philosophy is to create a pragmatically functional architecture that is thoughtfully adapted to site, setting, and environment.[5] Their mission is to design in a way that communicates meaning and produce “an apparently transparent style of architecture.”[6]

Selected Projects

1100 Architect’s wide range of domestic and international projects include institutional, residential, and commercial works.[7] 1100 Architect’s mission with each project is to create architecture that is pragmatically functional, embracing and humanistic, and universally accessible. Notable award-winning projects by 1100 Architect include the design for The Queens Central Library, Children’s Library Discovery Center in New York[8] and a residential house in Palm Beach, Florida.[9] See below for a list of selected completed projects by 1100 Architect.

Awards and Recognition

Over the years, 1100 Architect has received several awards and recognitions for their commitment to design excellence. In 2013, the firm’s design for a house in Palm Beach, Florida received the Elizabeth L. and John H. Schuler Award which annually recognizes design “in keeping with the traditional character of Palm Beach architecture.”[30] 1100 is also recognized for their excellence in library design, including receiving the 2013 NYLA-PLA Award for the Queens Central Library, Children’s Library Discovery Center,[31] the 2010 Interior Design Best of Year Merit Award for the New York Public Library, Battery Park City Branch,[32] and the 2009 AIA / American Library Association, Library Building Award for The New York Public Library, Francis Martin Library.[33]
