Reghu Kumar (Raghu Kumar; 13 June 1953 – 20 February 2014) was a noted music composer from Kerala, India.[1] His compositions were notable since the 1980s.[2]

Early life

Born into a prominent Pootheri family at Kozhikode in Kerala on 13 June 1953, Kumar started training in Indian classical music with Carnatic vocal at an early age under the tutelage of Guru G.S.Sreekrishnan.[3] Moved on to train in Indian percussion on the tabla under the able guidance of Guru Balasubramaniam (All India Radio). [4]Fascinated by Hindustani music, started training on the sitar under Guru Vincent (a.k.a. Vincent Master).[5]

At the age of 15, Reghu Kumar debuted on stage as an accompanying artist for eminent musicians on Indian classical and Western percussion all over India.[6] At the age of 16 he was a graded percussionist for All India Radio. He then graduated to grade 'A' music composer for All India Radio. Reghu Kumar made an entry into the film industry as a musician[7] under the guidance of the eminent music arranger/composer R. K. Shekhar (Father of A.R.Rahman).

Personal life

He was married to actress Bhavani.[8] The couple have two daughters : Bhavana, Bhavitha.[9]

Death

He died on 20 February 2014, due to kidney failure.[10] Prasanna and Vijayakumar are his siblings.[11][12][13]
