Location of Chennai and Bangalore within India

The Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor Project is an upcoming mega infrastructure project of Government of India. The corridor plans to come up along Chennai, Sriperumbudur, Ranipet,Banavaram,Chittoor, Bangarupalem, Palamaner, Bangarpet, Hoskote and Bangalore. It is expected to boost commerce between south India and east Asia by enabling quicker movement of goods from these places to the Chennai and Ennore ports. The department of industrial policy and promotion (DIPP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) are currently preparing a comprehensive plan for the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor.

World-Class Connectivity

In his Budget speech, finance minister P Chidambaram said the project with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) will be developed in collaboration with the governments of three southern states. The Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor is being modelled along the $100 billion Delhi-Mumbai (DMIC) industrial corridor.

“Though the corridor to Chennai may not benefit industries in Karnataka much, it will provide world-class connectivity to a port (Chennai) in the Bay of Bengal. However, the corridor to Mumbai is set to benefit a large number of districts in north Karnataka besides providing connectivity to a port (Mumbai) in the Arabian Sea said "L. Krishnan, chairman of the Karnataka State Council of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)".[1]

2 major backbone infrastructure projects will be created for the corridor. Both Road and Rail connectivity for Freight movement will be upgraded in this corridor.

Financial support from Japan

While initial studies are under way on the corridor to Chennai, which is being backed by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, studies are to take off on the corridor to Mumbai. Both the corridors have attracted international attention as Japan has already expressed its interest in both of them and British Prime Minister David Cameron, during his recent visit, evinced interest in the corridor to Mumbai. Once implemented, the industrial corridors would result in world-class tolled road, high-speed rail link and centres along the corridor would develop as industrial clusters. Normally, it takes about five to 10 years for a corridor to develop well from the conceptualisation stage.

States Included

The corridor will also be developed in collaboration with the governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Length of Corridor

The expressway will connect be 260-km drive and vehicles can zoom around 150-km speed covering Hoskote and Sriperumbudur in just little over two hours.[2]

Employment Generation

The development of Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor has been welcomed by industrialists, traders and politicians. Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan said the freight Corridor will alleviate the logistic sector and facilitate evacuation of cargoes from Chennai, Ennore and other ports.

Takayuki Ishida, MD and CEO of Nissan Motor India, expressed his happiness on the announcement of Corridor. “We are happy about the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor to be developed jointly by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA),” he said. The corridor will also be developed in collaboration with the governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. “This industrial corridor will play an important role in terms of logistics infrastructure for companies like ours that are present in the said region,” he added. Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry hailed the announcement of the project. Five business hubs have been identified along the corridor like Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, Palamaner and Chittoor in AP and Hoskote and Bangarpet in Karnataka. Steel, cement, food processing, information technology, automobile zone, readymade garment zones, petroleum, chemicals and petrochemicals complex were some zones expected along the business hub.[3]

Extension

Karnataka government has proposed to extend this corridor to Mangalore and reposition this corridor as a West seaport to East Seaport connectivity corridor. A new proposal has been put forward where the Corridor will have 2 seaports at the extreme ends and 3 international airports on the way, with Manufacturing industries setup in between. Mangalore has India's biggest Petrochemical complex, international air cargo facility, international airport, major seaport and located in a area which boasts of having highest literacy rate in India. Mangalore can be major export hub for Japanese companies for exports to countries in Africa and West Asia.
