Stewart Mills III is an American businessman and a Republican congressional candidate in Minnesota's 8th congressional district.[1][2]

Biography

Stewart Mills III is the grandson[3] of Mills Fleet Farm founder Stewart Mills Sr. Mills has worked for his family business in various capacities since he was 14.[4] He graduated from Northwood University in 1995 with a degree in business administration. Mills has been a board member of the Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police Foundation and is the creator of the Louis Hostager Award, given by the Brainerd Family YMCA.[1]

Issues

Gun rights

In January 2013, in opposition to efforts to implement stricter forms of gun control, Mills released a video message to Minnesota Congressman Rick Nolan, Senator Amy Klobuchar, and Senator Al Franken. In the video, Mills demonstrates how a duck-hunting shotgun is more destructive than a modern AR-15 sporting rifle.[4]

Health care

Mills says he opposes the Affordable Care Act and would replace it with a free-market system.[5]

Same sex marriage

He has not taken a position on same-sex marriage because "the state has already decided the issue."[6]

2014 congressional campaign

On June 26, 2013, Mills announced his intention to run as a Republican congressional candidate in Minnesota's 8th district, challenging incumbent Democrat Representative Rick Nolan.[7] Mills will run in the Republican primary on June 3, 2014. No other Republican candidates have filed to run in the district, making him the presumptive Republican nominee. The National Republican Congressional Committee added Mills to their "On the Radar" list in November 2013. Candidates who make this list receive "the tools they need to run successful, winning campaigns against their Democratic opponents."[8]

Mills has criticized Nolan for voting against funding for Veterans Affairs and against the Keystone pipeline.[5]
