CNOOC 981 Oil Rig (Simplified Chinese: 海洋石油981; pinyin: Hǎiyáng Shíyóu 981, lit.: Offshore Oilrig 981) is a semi-submersible drill rig owned by China's state-owned China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC. This is China's first deep-water drilling platform built domestically. CNOOC spent around $923 million for this project and it took 3 years for China State Shipbuilding Corp to construct the CNOOC 981. The rig weighs 31,000 tons and the platform is 114 meters long, 90 meters wide and 137.8 meters high. On May 2, 2014, CNOOC this rig in disputed waters south of the Paracel Islands. Vietnam objected to the placement, declaring that the rig is located on its continental shelf.
