James Wright Foley (died August 2014) was an American photojournalist who was captured and beheaded by the group calling itself the Islamic State in Iraq, according to a video released by the group. [1][2]

Foley was a native of Rochester, New Hampshire.[2] He graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 2008. [1]

He was captured in Syria in November of 2012, and was out of contact until August of 2014. On August 20, a video was posted to the Internet by ISIS depicting Foley making the statement "I wish I had more time. I wish I could have the hope for freedom to see my family once again." The video then shows an ISIS militant beheading him. [1] The militant then claimed that they were holding another American journalist, Steven Joel Soltoff, and would execute him unless US President Barack Obama halted airstrikes against them. [2]
