FULTON-CLASS SUBMARINE TENDER

The Fulton class was a class of United States Navy [Submarine tender|submarine tender]. The class takes it's name from the lead ship - the USS Fulton (AS-1) - which was launched on 6 June 1914 at New London Ship and Engine Company, Groton, Connecticut. The ship was sponsored by Mrs. A. T. Sutcliffe, great granddaughter of Robert Fulton, for whom the ship is named. The Fulton was commissioned on 7 December 1914, with Lieutenant J. D. Wilson in command.

The Fulton Class included the USS Fulton (AS-1), USS Fulton (AS-11), USS Sperry (AS-12), USS Bushnell (AS-15), USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS-16), USS Nereus (AS-17), USS Orion (AS-18), and USS Proteus (AS-19). All ships of this class have been decommissioned and scrapped.
