UNCL (pronounced uncle) is a contemporary loungewear clothing brand based in Los Angeles, California. UNCL designs, markets, and distributes loungewear products oriented for both comfort and aesthetic appeal. UNCL was originally created as a men's line, but a women's line was released five years after the company launched in 2010. UNCL is headquartered in Tustin, CA, where the clothing is designed and distributed. The brand is distinguished with its trademark cursive “U” logo, its slogan “the go-to comfort brand.”[1] Brian Bijan Moshayedi, son of sTec founder Mike Moshayedi, is the current CEO of UNCL.[2]

History

UNCL was founded by University of Southern California (USC) football players Drew Ness and Ahmed Mokhtar in early 2010.[3] According to Mokhtar, the brand adopted the name "UNCL" due to the laid-back nature associated with an uncle. Both founders believe the logo, U, is a symbol of luxury and leisure.[4] Investors such as Teague Egan,[5] 1st Round Enterprises[6], and other investment companies financially support the brand. UNCL is not currently a public company on the stock market.

Brands

UNCL

UNCL, the men's line, uses soft fabrics such as modal and polyester to design the apparel.[7] UNCL offers shirts, shorts, pants, t-shirts, and hoodies.[8]

UNCL Womens

In March 2015, five years after the original UNCL brand was created, UNCL Womens launched. The line focuses on modern style and popular trends while integrating the same soft fabrics used in the men's line. Alyssa Smith, brand director of NEXT Models, is the exclusive model for UNCL Womens. Although both brands use the same logo, UNCL Women’s slogan is, "Driven by design, comfortable by nature.”[9]

Culture

UNCL clothing is associated with comfort and sports wear. It is especially prevalent in college and professional football, where the founders originally marketed their products.[10] Notable athletes such as Reggie Bush, Kyle Rudolph, Terrell Owens, Troy Polamalu, Jason Pierre-Paul, and Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson continue to wear UNCL products despite being under contract by other clothing companies.[11] Celebrities such as Ne-Yo have also been seen wearing UNCL products.[12]

Retail

UNCL clothing is made in Los Angeles and sold in department stores such as Nordstrom and Bloomingdales, as well as boutiques and its official website. [13] UNCL does not currently have an independent retail store.
