Sterling/Winters Page

Hey Jen, can you help me understand why this new page is marked for deletion? I'd appreciate your mentorship. Thanks.

Borntodeal (talk) 21:32, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to delete the Sterling/Winters page so that I can research and prepare content that won't have the deletion notice. What's the process for deleting?

Ray Whitley

Hi Jen I have raked through the internet with the finest of tooth combs and found several new sources for information about Ray Whitley. A question for you, I have an email from a friend of Whitleys who knows Rays sister. Am I able to use this information or is it strictly only usable if its from a website? One other question I have is hopefully when the article is accepted I need to somehow make a difference between the two people with the same name. I believe it's a Disambiguation but not sure of how to go about it, or if it is myself that does it, or someone in higher control at Wiki. Also I would like to use a picture [1] I have found on the internet but not sure who has the copyright or how to go about aquiring permission. Maybe I'll just hold on a while... Thanks for your help. Tim Artofwork (talk) 17:23, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Artofwork: It looks like there should be enough there to write an article, though the article may have to be somewhat more bare-bones than what is there already. I'm working on some cleanup now. You can't use a non-published email because of Wikipedia's policies about original research and verifiability. Note that not all sources need to be "from a website" -- e.g. a published book that isn't online could also be a source, or a newspaper article from the 1960s or 1970s that hasn't been digitized. Regarding disambiguation, I can help you with that once the page is live. Finally, re: the picture issue, it's fairly complicated. Given that you have that email, could you contact a member of Whitley's family for a photo? That would be the best method. They would have to release a photo of Whitley under a free license, meaning that anyone (not just Wikipedia) could use it. See this page for more information about media donations. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:56, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Artofwork: Do you have a better source for him being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame? The problem is I'm not sure how we can tell that it's not the other (more famous) Ray Whitley that was inducted. That 45cat website doesn't look reliable, and the death notice placed by his family isn't a great source either. Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:06, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Artofwork: Nevermind, I found something! Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:19, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Jen I appreciate your hard work in untangling the two Rays. I'm sure he can rest in peace now. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Artofwork (talkcontribs) 18:48, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

18:23:00, 20 May 2015 review of submission by JenniferTyler1

JenniferTyler1 (talk) 18:23, 20 May 2015 (UTC) Hello Calliopejen1,[reply]

Thank you for your review and critique. I have trimmed the fat of the article to the bare bones that are backed up by the sources. I had composed the article based in part on the subject's LinkedIn bio trimming out the parts that are not supported by the sources.

In the edit I have tried to avoid sounding like an advertisement and have highlighted what is important about the subject. As a music executive, he was the man behind some of the biggest record holding albums and global celebrities (Beyonce') that we know today. As we can see he has also created a successful deal and product with Cohiba Cigars and Jay-Z.

Many of these types of subjects are very silent and do not seek attention, which is why I like and decided to pick such a person. My research has shown me that one would have to be at a very high level within the music business or cannabis industry to come into contact or do business with one of these subjects. For instance, Clive Calder may be the most successful record label owner in the history of music (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Calder) but his Wiki entry is scant when compared to contemporaries David Geffen or Jimmy Iovine. Partly because until he sold to BMG, he did not seek the spotlight and therefore very little written about this powerful man, yet the world knew about the artist he spawned (Will Smith, Britney Spears, N'Sync, The Backstreet Boys, R. Kelly).

I decided to try to encapsulate another important figure before he dies or has reached the lexicon. I believe it is an injustice that only the stories of those who seek the media are being told in Wikipedia. I ask that you please review the changes made and reconsider.

Cheers,

JT

The sources don't support the claims you're making here about Wright's importance. Wikipedia judges notability by coverage in reliable, independent sources and doesn't make special allowances for people who "do not seek attention". I really don't see a valid claim to notability here but leave the final judgment to another reviewer. Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:52, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your re-edit... I now understand how it should be written. Also, thank you for your impartiality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JenniferTyler1 (talkcontribs) 03:04, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In my research post resubmission, I have come across multiple pages on Wikipedia of artist such as flykingi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flykingi)that have extensive Wiki articles, sketchy sources and have not done .1% that my subject matter has in their given industry. I am asking for clarity as to the standard of significance/criteria for a Wikipedia article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by JenniferTyler1 (talkcontribs) 20:53, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@JenniferTyler1: I recommend reading WP:OTHERCRAP (why it's not helpful to point to other crappy articles) and WP:GNG (the rules about notability, i.e. who qualifies for an article). Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:16, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Panama

You're good with excel. Any chance you could use this to generate stubs for all of the Corregimientos of Panama? I asked Acorterion to import this from Spanish wiki.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:51, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Blofeld, I'll work on this. It may take a little while -- check back with me in a week or so if I haven't replied. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:06, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
tThe best way I think would be to put on excel and then get a set format like xxx is a village and corregimiento of xxx Province, Panama. As of 2010 it had a population of ddd, and covered an area of xxxx km2. Then simply start them all feeding off the common data. That could be done fairly quickly I think!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:22, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Blofeld, The problem is that there isn't a one fact per column format so it will take some manual reformatting to get to a good starting point. And then there are inconsistencies in the data e.g. some have historical population data and some do not, some have provinces and some have comarcas, etc etc. I can get there but it will take a bit of doing. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:49, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Blofeld, I've made a good start. What categories should each of the corregimientos be filed under? Corregimientos of X (either Panama, District, or Province), and that's enough? Should Category:Corregimientos of Panama be broken down by province or district? FYI, there are 631 corregimientos, ~69 districts, and 12 provinces/comarcas. Calliopejen1 (talk) 00:37, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Blofeld -- for your review, a few samples! User:Calliopejen1/Panama QC. Calliopejen1 (talk) 01:27, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! I think Category:Corregimientos of xxx Province would work better and then a Category:Populated places by district. I think ones like Miramar, Bocas del Toro should be restarted. We seem to have provincial templates for the corregs anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:55, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Blofeld -- The first 100 articles are one after the other at User:Calliopejen1/Panama QC. Let me know when you're finished with them so I can put up the next batch for you (it's too big a page size to save all at once). Or let me know if you'd prefer me to send you the Excel file, or whatever. You'll have to start categories (and maybe some navboxes) as you go. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:49, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and about the ones that exist currently, some of them are better than what I've got, and some are worse. Most at least have coordinates for the places, which my articles don't have. And be careful with the two comarcas that are at the corregimiento level -- Kuna de Wargandí and Kuna de Madungandí. Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:51, 27 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That's great, thanks, will start when I have more energy!♦ Dr. Blofeld 06:58, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Blofeld -- Cool. I see you've done a few. Based on your work, I just redid the articles to include the panama-geo-stub template. I was also thinking of eliminating latm/lats/latNS/longm/longs/longEW (currently blank rows) from the infobox because I normally just use decimal cords pulled from Google maps. Thoughts? I think you'll be doing most of these, and not sure what your standard operating procedure is. Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:23, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Well you could add {coord missing|Panama} and Anome will take care of that later I suppose. Keep the parameters as they are, I never use decimal in infoboxes. Next month I won't have so many entries for the Intertrans project so I should be able to focus more on that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:48, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Blofeld -- Done. BTW before we start on Panama province, we'll need to sort out those entries between Panama and Panama Oeste (a new province that was created after the last census -- see es:Provincia de Panamá Oeste). I'm also looking into whether there's an easy way for me to include interwiki links in my generic articles... will keep you posted. Calliopejen1 (talk) 21:17, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for creating a few of them!♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:34, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

First batch done. Can you check Kuna de Wargandí, doesn't seem right. It's an independent comarca/province. Is there another one of the same name in Darien Province? Should be separate I'd guess, can you sort it out?♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:34, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Blofeld -- I added a new batch for you. Kuna de Wargandí is actually right -- there are three comarcas that are province-level, and two that are corregimiento-level inside other provinces (including Kuna de Wargandí). Calliopejen1 (talk) 16:37, 1 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry I've been rather sidetracked, will try to get the Panama ones finished this week. Finished the last lot, but there still seems to be a missing one in Template:Panama Province . Where are we now, about half way?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:44, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think that's actually a corregimiento. See the Spanish article -- the city (the capital) is a district, and its subdivisions are corregimientos. I think that it's included in the template because it's the capital, not because it's a corregimiento. That happened to me once in Panama Oeste Province. We may want to redirect the link in the template to a combined city/district article like es.wiki has done. We're about 60% done I think -- I'll put some more up a bit later. Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:55, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dr. Blofeld -- New batch ready for creation! Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:27, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Will continue tomorrow, just making a start on sorting out the French building stubs. Considering how many departments rather a large task!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:39, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

13:03:32, 26 May 2015 review of submission by ENVS6178

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to review my article Bill C-634: Canadian Environmental Bill of Rights. I wanted to let you know that I will be updating and reviewing my article using your comments but I do not feel that news coverage necessarily dictates notability. Bill C-634 has actually passed the second reading within the Canadian House of Commons which notes that members debated the bills principles and decided that the bill meet the Canadian public needs and that the ideas were sound. This is turn makes the Bill more significant than a "run-of-the-mill legislative proposal going nowhere" as you commented on.

I would argue that where pieces of legislation are considered the process and intent behind them is just as significant as the media coverage they receive. Especially for students of the law, policy and environment within Canada. This is why I will be reviewing my work and resubmitting it soon.

Thank you again for your help and have a wonderful day. ENVS6178 (talk) 13:03, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

ENVS6178 Please read WP:GNG. Coverage by reliable sources (which in the case of proposed legislation would be newspapers) is the be-all-end-all of notability here on Wikipedia. Calliopejen1 (talk) 17:03, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

04:38:05, 28 May 2015 review of submission by Kunal.v.v

Dear Calliopejen1, this is regarding my article about an Indian Fashion Designer. The subject is notable because she has been there in the industry for a decade now as a quite worker, working away from limelight. All the references made gives impression of notability and being notable. There is very limited references as she been not at all in limelight. some people makes effect and work for society being an unknown that doesn't mean they aren't notable. Kunal.v.v (talk) 04:38, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Kunal.v.v, Wikipedia judges notability by coverage in reliable sources. A person who is a "quiet worker" and does not receive press coverage simply does not qualify for a Wikipedia article. I see you have resubmitted the article for review without improving the referencing. I can all but guarantee that the next reviewer will decline your article as well. Nayyar needs to first employ a PR person to get some news coverage, and I recommend reworking the article a year or two from now. Calliopejen1 (talk) 05:51, 28 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
