Igor Kim (born 12 January 1966 in Ushtobe, Alma-Ata Region, Kazakh SSR) is a strategic investor and businessman best known as a prolific dealmaker in the financial-services sector. He has completed more than 30 mergers and acquisitions[1] involving multinational financial groups and Russian partners, most notably the acquisition of Barclays Bank LLC, the former Russian unit of Barclays Bank PLC, and transactions with Morgan Stanley[2], LBBW[3], Santander[4] and WestLB[5].

Igor Kim is the major shareholder in the Expobank group, which comprises Expobank LLC (Russia, 66.64% stake), AS Expobank (Latvia, 100% stake) and Expobank CZ a.s. (Czech Republic, 68.87% stake). He serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of all three banks.[6]

Igor Kim has twice been named Russia's Banker of the Year, in 2003 and 2009.[7] His wealth was estimated by the Russian edition of Forbes magazine at USD 460 million in 2013.[1]

Biography

Igor Kim was born on 12 January 1966 in Ushtobe in the Alma-Ata Region of the Kazakh SSR[8]. In 1990 he graduated from Novosibirsk State University with a degree in Economic Cybernetics.

After graduating Igor Kim went into business, forming a cooperative based on a Student construction brigade. Later he became a commodities trader.[1]

Igor Kim began his career in banking in 1993, when he became deputy chairman of the management board of Russian People’s Bank in Novosibirsk[1], and was then named chairman of the management board in 1995.

Between 1998 and 2004, Igor Kim was first CEO and then chairman of Sibakadembank[1]. In 2004 he joined the board of Uralvneshtorgbank, becoming chairman in 2005. The controlling shareholder of both Sibakadembank and Uralvneshtorgbank, in 2006 Igor Kim merged the two banks into URSA Bank and was named chairman of the new entity[1].

In 2008 URSA Bank and MDM Bank agreed to merge, with Igor Kim becoming chairman of the management board of the enlarged MDM Bank as well as a member of the Board[1]. He stepped down as Chairman of the Management Board of MDM Bank in 2010[1].

In late 2011, Igor Kim and his business partners bought Barclays Bank LLC from Barclays Group, and returned the franchise to its original name of Expobank[4].

Since 2012, Igor Kim has sought to grow the Expobank group through a series of acquisitions in a number of European markets, including the purchase of WestLB Vostok, from WestLB AG[4] and FB-Leasing from VR Leasing AG (both were merged into Expobank LLC); as well as LBBW Bank CZ a.s., which was renamed as Expobank CZ a.s.[3] In March 2015, Expobank LLC purchased an 84.66% stake in MAK-bank from ALROSA, which was also merged into Expobank LLC[9].

Igor Kim has twice featured in the list of wealthiest people compiled by Forbes Russia, in 2009 with $0.4bln and 2011 with $0.5bln[10]

He is married with two children.[10]
